We talked about this in CE 503 highway design. It's kind of blows the mind.

http://intersectionsystem.com/eng/product02.html
Enlarge and watch the animation(on the left). It's mainly for two arterials meeting each other and it takes up less right-of-way than a conventional diamond interchange. Also, free flowing traffic.

The other one they have on there is the two level signalized intersection.

So what exactly is an arterial?

(I know you were hoping someone would ask that)

It's like a road that is Western blvd or Wake Forest rd. It's just a big road that a lot of people travel on. Gorman street is a 2 lane arterial and Western is a 4 lane arterial. Avent Ferry would be a collector because it takes traffic to the arterial.

Interstates can sometimes be considered arterials, but they are access controlled.

^The construction cost wouldn't be that much more than a diamond interchange. It's patented though...so there's extra cost.

If they had one at every interchange on 440(except 440 at the 40), that would be kinda cool.

also, i know NY and DC have basically this system for a lot of their main arteries

and i would imagine a lot of major cities do as well...

its not exactly the same as the design shown, but very similar

ie check out many of the upper NW alphabet avenues (like K, L St, NW) and (M St, SE and S. Capitol intersection)

they operate basically the same way

Which brings up the fact that, if they're so smart, why would they design something that they can't drive?

what a dumb thing to say

like the word arterials isnt derived from artery and therefore using the term artery to describe a major thoroughfare for moving traffic through a city metaphorically as a wide tube for transporting blood through the body in high capacity, usually through the HEART of the city

i mean

fucking seriously?

I wasn't trying to split hairs. Just not used to it.

After looking at the 3rd definition of one and the 2nd of the other, they both in fact, mean the same thing.

there is a SLIGHT difference between a traffic circle and a 2-level intersection/interchange

We had a project this semester to redesign the interchange at 440 and Wake Forest rd. It's probably going to need an overhaul withing the next 20 years.

Shit, 440/40 and US 1 is a frickin huge interchange that takes up massive amount of land for right-of-way. A smaller interchange there would free up good real estate for commercial use.

Our instructor made it seem like a big deal, but he's got like 16 patented intersections. Not all of them are in use though.

jaybee, while you are correct that DC has traffic circles,

DC also has MANY intersections that operate as ALkatraz describes, or very similarly

for your education, check up and down North and South Capitol St, K ST & M St, NW, and a plethora of other intersections throughout the city

so

you didnt know what the fuck you were talking about.

Hell, just make it a 4-level intersection, with the top and bottom levels having the cars just go straight and the two middle roundabouts are the turns for each road.

cool, but the problem with some of those is the far left lane entrances/exits. puts too many slow people in those lanes, and then you always have the dumbasses who don't know where they're going, so their cutting across the highway trying to exit

The last thing we need is more people yielding in this country.
