Even if that's the case, I could get there and back in a tankful, which for me would be $40 (at the 4/gal rate).

keep your tires inflated to recommended PSI and change your air filter will increase fuel efficiency by 3.5%

^^Tim, do what Beckers said. Your car isn't that old, your injector excuse is BS lol.

To answer the thread's question no not really. I still plan on going to the beach every available weekend that I can. Granted thats only about 140 miles round trip. Though I do plan on driving NYC to Raleigh at least once (that'll hurt if I'm going solo).

B/c of higher gas prices I'll just have to cut out other things, like the $100 nights out drinking.

[Edited on May 2, 2008 at 3:54 PM. Reason : PS my car only takes premium so I'm already paying $4.00/gal]

Driving slower with less acceleration for starts saves a lot of gas.

I've never gotten more than 11.2 gallons in my tank. And I've never gotten less than 350 miles per tank...

Regular gas is already 3.92 out here. Premium is averaging around 4.17.

And to the question about travel... I'd love to be able to go ANYWHERE, but seeing as how I get no break from school until Xmas, that ain't happenign.

^^agreed. No way a Mazda 3 2.3 can't get 30+mpg on the highway.

^Bryan you're not pushing it enough! I'm pretty sure your tank is larger than mine. I've never put more than 12 in at any time (not counting the time I ran out )

not really. Gas prices are to start going down. It will be about the same as it was last year. Even if they get up to 4 a gallon, the extra 15 a tank would be more than worth the trips.

I'm spending $440/mo. on gasoline right now. Do not want to drive anymore. Need to perform vehicular maintenance.

With all the money I'll save, I can get hammered every night that I can afford time to.

my 1.9-liter saturn 4-banger gets no LESS than 30mpg city, and about 40mpg on the highway, depending on how much of a hurry i'm in and whether or not i've got bikes or a kayak on the roof rack

Even driving a diesel engine VW Golf, which is far more fuel efficient for the money than a gasoline powered car, I am keeping my tushy at home a little more. I use to drive to Greenville like 3 times a month and I'm not doing than nearly as often now that it takes $60 to fill up my tank.

diesel is still over $4 a gallon isn't it? that's enough to keep me home despite the mileage/gallon. it's a perception thing.

Diesel may be over $4/gallon, but I get nearly twice as many miles to the gallon as a gasoline car. So as long as diesel isn't twice as much as gasoline, I'm coming out ahead using diesel over gas.

[Edited on May 2, 2008 at 11:31 PM. Reason : But trust me, I get the whole perception thing. ]

you can make your own biodiesel for about $2/gallon, with about $1k in initial investment, IIRC

^^ i know you don't get 50+ mpg in that thing do you? (i'd believe 40, but over 50-55, i'd have a hard time believing.)

^ something like that. but you have to have a place to get it. (if i'm right, there's not too many places to get straight-up biodiesel around here unless you're looking at chinese restaurants.)

Right now I'm at 160200 on my Jeep Cherokee, another co-op rotation and I should be at 170000.

I want at least 250k before it's over. 18 MPG if I drive it like a normal person. I am not a normal person.

I'm sure we all waste money on worse things...try living in parts of the world where its $18/gallon...then you would figure out how to get places without owning a car.

though i admit, i didn't do much but glance at these...a year or two back when i looked at picking up a diesel golf, i debated doing this, but i hadn't bought a house then, and had nowhere to put the setup...i spoke with the people who own the pittsboro plant, and they said they've helped a number of people set up their own BD homebrews for around $1k

I have a manual TDI, so I certainly get closer to 50 than 40 mpg. Esp on the highway.

[Edited on May 2, 2008 at 11:44 PM. Reason : Going diesel was a great decision for me, financially speaking.]

^^ nice

^^^ yeah, we took a tour of that plant for work. (I work for a company that uses diesel engines) and i remember them saying something similar now that you mention it. i know that e85 ethanol is quite common now, but didn't realize it was reasonably simple for the every day person to make biodiesel.

i'll have to read up. thx for the links.

my next car will be a diesel (preferable) or an E85 equivalent

ethanol for about $1/gallon without using corn (because, really, corn is one of the stupidest materials to use):

http://www.wired.com/cars/energy/news/2008/01/ethanol23

and no problem...i love this stuff...i'd love to have the money to pull together some working alternative fuel plants around here (it was my major, after all )

The only problems that I have had with diesel is finding it (especially when I lived somewhere like yuppie central in Cary) and they can be a little more finicky than a gasoline engine.

ah, see, i know very little about the mechanics of engines and such...mostly just the biological and chemical aspects of biodiesel and ethanol production...oh, and environmental toxicology, for whatever reason
