Saw these elsewhere and thought I'd post them up here:

Quote :
"Just want everyone to be on your toes; one of the homes on Kaplan
across from the frisbee golf course park had their cars broken into.
They have three vehicles. Typical stuff stolen; CDs, Stroller(??),
etc. It happened over the course of last nite or probably early in the
morning.
Over the course of the past several days I have noticed individuals who
do not seem to be neighbors walking the streets, especially in the Bryn-
Mawr section.
Keep your eyes and ears open.....
"

Quote :
"I was just about to post...

Our car on the corner of Octavia and Brent was broken into last night.
They took an iPod, a rifle, fish food (??), and some other small
things.

They were apparently on foot as some neighbors found the contents of
my purse scattered all over their yard.

Please be careful!"

"Hi everyone -

I have been meaning to post as well. The homes on our side of Bryn Mawr have had several unusual visitors over the last couple of weeks - young men (and in one instance, a young woman) coming to the front door with a clipboard in-hand, asking about if we need any "home improvement" work done. None of these people could produce a card or a telephone number or a business name and I think that everyone on our street has politely asked them not to come to the home again. I think the fact that several of us have BIG dogs helped too.

Anyhow, then on Tuesday morning while I was walking our dog, our remote outdoor temperature sensor (about the size/shape of a small television remote) that normally sits atop our electric meter was taken down and left on the floor of our carport. The back was pulled off and the batteries were removed and sitting beside it on the ground when I returned. Given the recent "visitors" to the house, the whole thing made me really nervous so I called the RPD's non-emergency number and a police officer came out to the house. We agree with the police officer that the remote outdoor temperature sensor may have appeared to someone like one of those common lock-boxes that people have to hide a spare key on the outside of their home. The fact that someone would tamper with it at all - then leaving it splayed out on the ground was very unsettling. I was only gone from the house for a short time - from about 8-8:25 a.m. and my car was still in the driveway while I was out with the dog. My husband was already at work.

Anyhow, the police officer strongly recommended that we call the non-emergency number IMMEDIATELY if we see unusual characters going door-to-door again. Our neighbors across the street said that the visitors they've had to the house have all come in the middle of the day on a weekday, at times when most people wouldn't otherwise be at home.

Now hearing about these break-ins to people's cars adds to the anxiety a bit. Not to mention the front page article in yesterday's N&O about the huge spike in home invasions and robberies between this year and last. I'm sorry for not posting sooner, but I'll be sure to share anything else that may happen."

my dad's house got broken into yesterday in pittsboro. scary thing is, he pretty much lives out in the middle of nowhere. they caught the guys and said they've been involved in a series of break-ins throughout chatham county.

Yeah, that's not cool.

I don't know much about this neighborhood, but I'm guessing it's one of those kind of gentrified neighborhoods that sit not too far from sketchier neighborhoods?

That's definitely not cool, but those people are all fools for having left stuff in their car if they're in a gentrified neighborhood as I've described it.

LOCK TAKE HIDE EERYBODY!

Even if you don't have shit in your car, they'd probably have no problem jacking your radio.

"We live on Hunters Creek Lane off of Merrie Road. My car was left
unlocked by my son last night and I had an MP3 player, earplugs for it
and my cell phone, and sunglasses taken. The back passenger door was
left ajar. There was a grey ski mask dropped in the middle of our
street which I picked up and placed in the trash.

FYI (For Y'alls Information):

Quote :
"Yesterday about 4:00pm, a silver Nissan Altima pulled into our
driveway (which over a bridge). Then he backed up as if to turn
around. I was in the process of leaving the house so I locked up and
went out into the garage thinking I would meet them outside and see
what they wanted. As soon as I entered the garage there was a voice
and there stood a man. He said that I startled him then went on to
ask if I wanted to buy any power tools (he was standing at my work
bench looking at mine). I told him I wasn't interested and we went
outside. His car was backed up to my open garage door. He asked if
anyone else in the area might want the tools then stated "they
probably have already bought any that they need" and left. His car
did not have a license plate but as he drove away I noticed a
tattered temporary tag in the back window but could not read it.

I got a call later last night from a neighbor two blocks away who had
heard my story and said she had the same senario just minutes earlier
that afternoon. She had called police but none arrived. He left her
house and stopped at two more on my street (Onslow) before getting to
mine. In each case he backed in including another where he entered a
detached garage before being confronted by the home owner.

He is African-American, 30 something, average height/weight, late
model silver Nissan Altima 2.5S, no plate, 30-tag in window.

He is very bold. Came over our bridge where one car was in the
driveway and another in the open garage. One of the other homes has a
long winding driveway through the woods where the house can't be seen
from the road with beware of dog signs. None of that deterred him.

Police were called from the non-emergency number and 911 but nobody
ever saw them.
"

"We may know whose tools were being sold, apparently the same
car (or very similar) was doing the same thing in Boylan a few days
prior, just a day or two after an acquaintence of ours had his tools
stolen from his Boylan house that is being renovated. They actually
stole some of them early in the day, then went back and got the rest
of them later the same day. Bold indeed. Please call the police if
anyone sees the car.
"

Damn. I keep my car doors locked and try to keep valuables out of sight...hopefully no one would break in to take a shitty factory radio or on the chance that there might be something in the center console.

This is why we have guns.

*suspicious person in garage*

*greet with weapon*

"Don't move and put your hands up behind your head. Walk to your car. Drive away from here and don't come back. I never want to see you around here again. I will not be as nice the next time I see you."

Of course you could be a lot more of an ass instead of just pointing a loaded gun at him and telling him to go away, but I think this would get the point across considering the guy seems to be reasonably smart. He knows to leave when people catch him in their garage, he'd probably know not to come back if some crazy asshole with a gun told him to go away.

Crime is everyone's problem. Just because he won't come back to your house doesn't mean it's all good. It would be best for the guy to get caught so none of us have to worry about him.

And I really don't think this area is that sketchy. There are thieves everywhere. If it's not some dude stealing your tools it will be a 15 year old kid trying to gank your mountain bike. It's good to keep an eye out for each other.

And what about pointing the gun at him and escorting him to his car and off your property would prevent him from being caught?

You can still call the police to report a suspicious person even after you do this.

It isn't going to help him get caught any more than just telling him to leave.

I personally wouldn't brandish a gun and then tell someone to leave. If I brandish a gun I'll be telling them to lay down. It is a very serious thing to do and it will result in a charge if you don't have very good reason to do so. You do not have any right to pull a gun on every person who steps foot in your yard.

I agree. Don't get me wrong; I'm all for people defending themselves. I just wouldn't want anyone here to do something stupid and get hurt, killed, or charged with a crime. It seems like there is a very fine line between protecting yourself and being a criminal.

this is nothing new.

i've known plenty of people to have their cars broken into while parked on kaplan at hunter's club dr. across from those apartments.

funny thing is i live off hillsborough near campus, and often leave my old car unlocked.

numerous times i have had my spare change cleaned out, but ipod/cd/player/etc. left untouched. . .

i now prefer bums to gangsters anyday.
