smaller pixels in a tighter pattern costs more money to produce. Look at LCD monitors to see how much an 8x10 digital picture frame would actually cost. It'd be well over $100.

i know - that's true, but 200px is like worse than my cell phone outputs now. it's like a little banner at the top of a page.

have you looked at the cost of these picture frames. The ones dF is talking about are still easily $70-80. They are ridiculously expensive for the resolution they provide. I would be willing to pay a normal LCD price for a 10" frame with a decent 1200x800 or 1400x1000 resolution or something, but not for 800x400....

because the majority of people buying them do not even know what the word resolution means?

but still, most that I see are still over 72ppi. Most are 75-85 in the ones I've pulled up.

7" diagonal = 6 2/3 x 3 1/4 480x234

I took an old laptop and made a digital picture frame for my wife. Its a little thicker than the ones they sell at the store, but its got a 12" screen, and wireless connectivity.

It runs linux and just runs a slideshow built from crawling directories. She just drops pictures in the folders over the wireless network to change whats displaying on the screen.

Its an old pentium laptop, but runs the stuff fine. I got the laptop for $60 i think.

I can take pics of it later if you wanna see.

they're nice for gifts. Parents and GP's love them, because 1) they're kind of a marvel to old people (you mean.... it's a picture frame, but it's like a computer?!) and 2) you can personalize them easy. We gave one to my mother-in-law for christmas, and we pre-loaded the memory card with lots of pictures of us and vacation and stuff. If you want to get a more fancy one, you can have them sync wirelessly to Flickr or some other service so the pictures are updated automagically. For example, think how much a grandparent would like it if you went on vacation somewhere, then a day later their picture frame started showing pictures from that vacation automatically, without them doing anything.

Not one customer has EVER asked about the resolution of frames. Just point out the one in the ad and say I want that!

SO why bother making them look better?

800*600 is about the highest I have seen in a sub $200 8 inch frame

agentlion, my comment was more of sarcasm than anything else. I know what uses and targeted market, but honestly, they are no more than simple, thoughtless gifts/trinket. It's another one of those products to buy your parents something other than a shirt or tie...

For 700 bucks, you could have bought a really nice 24" LCD, shit, just get a cheap 37" or 40" LCD HDTV and turn that into a picture frame.

Here are some pics of the frame I made.

It is a shadow box from michaels or whatever, with some framing mat, and then the laptop just taken out of its case and mounted in the box.

Front of the frame:

Back of the frame, you can see the vent holes at the top, and if you look close, some of the bolts in the lower left that mount the laptop motherboard to the back board.

The frame booting up KDE on Mandrake

The frame showing pictures:

The LCD looks really crappy in these pictures, but its very bright when you are looking at it in person.

I made it around 4 years ago when the digital frames were first coming out, and were like $800-$1000. I saw it in the store and went "shit, i can make that for a lot less".
