its different different places. some places have the names and alphabetize by names, some by abbrev and alpha by that, and some switch it up and have names and alpha it by abbrev. 5/6/2008 4:38:49 PM |

7 times?
that's a lot
how about how I do it:
hit 'O' once, then up-arrow twice
3 < 7
of course, if the field uses the 2-letter state abbreviations, you only have to hit 'N' once 5/6/2008 4:46:07 PM |

most of the time the N O works for me. If it doesn't then it is the N ^^ 5/6/2008 4:52:30 PM |

Double click the message board list drop-down box.
Type "S", rapidly followed by "T".
Notice how it focuses on Study Hall and not Sports Talk.
I win.

^^ yeah, that doesn't work
first of all, thewolfweb message board drop-down menu has an "onChange" event handler script
so after the first keystroke is pressed (doesn't even have to be released,) the script changes the page
and therefore never even "notices" the second keystroke
so this drop-down menu isn't a good test example
also, the select box goes to the next option (that starts with the letter typed) below the one already selected
so, from chit chat, the next 'S' is sports talk, but if your were in, say, entertainment, the next 'S' is study hall
iow, if you turn off javascript and type 'ST' in thewolfweb message board drop-down menu,
it selects 'S' for sports talk, then 'T' for tech talk
or, if you start from entertainment, it selects 'S' for study hall, then 'T' for the lounge
I have yet to find a drop-down box (html, not flash or something,) where the first two letters work
sorry ernie, but you do not win

No, it works from any board, from the Lounge to Feedback Forum.
If you type S, then T, quickly, it focuses on Study Hall, not Sports Talk, before onChange is called. I know how the list works, that's why I chose Study Hall as the example.
It works in FF, IE, and Opera. You're either dumb or trolling.5/6/2008 9:50:17 PM |

I'm on ie right now -- I'll try it on the others
but seriously
everything I described is exactly what I (and I assume others,) experience
not sure why yours is different
anyone? 5/6/2008 10:04:43 PM |

i think what Ernie is saying is correct, but you have to hit T IMMEDIATELY after hitting S
its kind of finicky though 5/6/2008 10:06:11 PM |

nah man
no matter how fast I do it, I get the same result
(and I've played piano for over 20 years, so I can hit keys rather proficiently)
does anyone else have input on this? 5/6/2008 10:15:25 PM |

That's wrong, too. If you hold down a letter from the the list, it just scrolls between values (holding C scrolls back and forth between Chit Chat and Classifieds.
There's a delay between releasing the key and onChange being called. It's a short delay, but enough time to go to a second, third, fourth letter and so on.
I believe it's called a type-ahead drop down list. Read up.

I'm using FF, running Ubuntu now. I know it works as I've described it in FF/Opera/IE on XP and I just tested it in FF on Vista. All work exactly like I've said. 5/6/2008 10:28:05 PM |
