my 5 free HD-DVDs finally came today, so now i need opinions on which to keep and which to exchange at circuit city (and no, i don't care that it's fraud, and circuit city doesn't care, either)...i got:

the departed
babel
training day
troy
12 monkeys

i already have king kong (of course) and serenity (which i received as an exchange on a free blu-ray i received in the mail)...and yes, i'm embracing the defunct HD-DVD format because i got the xbox HD-DVD add-on for $16 ($50 - $24 gift card because my order wasn't ready on time - $10 when i sold the remote)...i needed a DVD player for my HTPC anyway, so $16 for an HD-DVD player and 6 movies isn't shabby

oh, and i have the 4-disc planet earth series which i picked up for $20

i liked the departed. training day didn't appeal to me. troy was cool i guess, but it's not something i'd want to watch more than once.

i loved 12 monkeys, i'm keeping that one...actually, they sent me better movies than i checked on my list, since they were "out" of the ones they listed as options

never seen the departed or babel...i thought, maybe, that the effects on troy might be worth keeping it for...training day was okay, but nothing i'd keep if i can trade it for something else

do you need to see 21 grams for babel to make sense? babel's the sequel, right?

Are you exchanging them for Blu-ray discs, HD-DVDs, or SD DVDs? Just curious...I have four from the free by mail ones (The Frighteners, The Italian Job, Full Metal Jacket, and Troy: DC) that I want to get rid of myself (did it twice, and got what WERE the higher sellers on ebay at the time).

the scenery in Troy at 1080p is breathtaking. It is by far the best movie I've seen so far for demonstrating the capabilities of blu-ray.

i'm exchanging them for different HD-DVDs

i don't have a BR player, and until they don't cost $france, i have no intention of getting one (again, i challenge anyone to beat $16 for an HD-DVD player and 6 movies)...i wouldn't have gone HD-DVD except for that deal because upscaling DVD was good enough for me...that and dl'ing any 720p content that i'm interested in (since my tv only does 720p)

i wouldn't go out of my way to buy any (save planet earth...i cannot accurately convey how awesome it is to watch it on a 60" 1080p plasma with surround sound)...but hey, i got HD-DVD cheaper than i could have gotten regular DVD, so why not?

Thanks...I might try that tomorrow (except for The Frighteners, its got a gash through the UPC that pretty much screams "I got these for free!")...might take back The Departed since I hate combo discs (will get it on Blu eventually).

Surprised CC still has HD-DVDs though...I know Best Buy sent them all back soon after Toshiba pulled the plug. I dont think I saw any last time I was in there honestly.

ah, well, i can't swear that CC has them...they had them a few weeks ago (like, 3) when i took in my free blu-ray disc (from that online BR "become an expert" test they had) and exchanged it...it's entirely possible they don't have any

So, how did this work out for you?

neither the best buy nor the circuit city at crossroads had any HD-DVDs in stock (though the guy at cc swore they had some just last week in their bargain bin)...oh well, it was worth a shot...i looked back on the original list i was given to choose from for HD-DVDs and, really, i ended up with movies a lot better than i supposed to
