'...for giving a baby a timbit'
Timbit = donut hole

Quote :
" Nicole Lilliman, 27, was fired yesterday from her Tim Hortons job for giving one of the 16-cent blobs of fried dough to a tot.

"I have been fired for giving a baby a Timbit," Lilliman said yesterday.

"It was just out of my heart – she was pointing and going `ah, ah...' I should have gone to my purse and got the change, but it was busy."

Lilliman, who has worked at the store for three years, said she thought little of the incident since Timbits are often doled out to dogs and children.

She said the baby was about 11 months old, and she gave her the treat to quiet her, since her mom – a Tims' regular – had been ``having a bad day."

"I could see (the dismissal) if it was a sandwich or something," she said. "But it was a Timbit."

Three managers greeted her yesterday, saying she had been caught on video giving free food to a child.

"They said, `Remember, Monday you gave out a free Timbit,' " she said.

"I had to think, then I was like, `Oh yeah,' and I smiled because I thought I'd get a warning."

Instead, she was fired for theft.

Giving food away is against the rules, said Tim Hortons district manager Nicole Mitchell.

The Timbits given to pets, Mitchell added, are usually "day-old and recycled."

If she stole something, then there is no reason she can complain. I understand your sentiments, but if there is a book to go by, and someone goes by the book, I got one word for you: Sorry.

I never said she didn't steal.

I just mentioned common sense

Common sense says you don't alienate a regular, paying customer by punishing an employee who does something kind for your kid, for sixteen cents. It probably would have cost more in labor costs for the employee to ring up the timbit. For sure, if it were a separate transaction, and possibly even if it were lumped into the mom's normal transaction

expecting the manager of a donut shop to have the best judgment, in Canada or elsewhere, is a mistake.

I am inclined to believe stealing was the reason given but she was probably doing other stuff to piss the manager off/make her dispensable.

Even morons don't fire good employees for little bullshit unless there is more to the story.

100% correct. I can think of several corporations that do this and have worked for one.

I was a manager for American Golf and had to fire two people for "stealing" M&M's from the snack bar. The company was restructuring and didn't lay anyone off, they just fired them.

The reason for this is because of unemployment claims. No person who is fired for stealing from an employer will be able to collect unemployment, period.

Corporate managers are idiots anyway (no idea about franchise managers). You should see their qualifications. I am a consultant (troubleshooter) for a few corporations and when you see someone of these idiots in middle/upper management, I wonder how they gather the brain power to get dressed in the morning.

It wasn't so much of a problem in the past, but now that the economy seems to be tanking, lots of employees down the line are feeling the heat from their middle managers who are trying to cut costs everywhere (in addition to increasing their customer service/average ticket - if that makes any sense).

The tim hortons / wendy's merger was a bad idea, but things have gotten worse as of late.

Giving a ball of processed sugar to an 11 month old shows this woman had an IQ of about 60. She should be fired.

i don't know, there are people who have misguided black and white viewpoints like this:

While this is a very reasonable and understandable view to have...

The reason that wasn't the first thing that came to my mind is because bitchy, stupid, cranky managers who have no business supervising anyone are the rule, and not the exception.

We may not ever know all the circumstances, and that may very well be the case.

Or it could be something as ridiculous as a fat manager hating an employee because the employee is skinny.

Not misguided, just saying that if you know that something can caused you to get fired and if you do it, no matter how frivolous it is, the expected result should be known. I'm not saying I would have fired her, but if you know, you know.

and my boss should know that if he fires me for something as frivolous as this, i'm going to drag his ass out on the street and beat his ass. He shouldn't get pissed about it, cause if you know, you know.

^ I think you can get unemployment as long as you don't quit a job, if I am not mistaken. Even though you got fired, that still doesn't mean that you didn't work like you should have, and did your job, and doesn't deserve some help until you find employment.

Sounds good, but untrue.

There are a ton of circumstances that will disqualify you from collecting unemployment. Stealing is definitely one of them. Employers don't want their Unemployment Insurance premium to rise.

^^She has been approached by Playboy and has been asked to appear to the tune of $25,000 per picture.

Everything has worked out okay for her, I guess. I don't think she'd get unemployment either.

She might have turned off the freezers on purpose one night, causing hundreds of dollars of product to be lost

Or left the doors unlocked to the store one night

Or repeatedly have to be told to stop talking to their friends and get their ass to work

Much like the people where I used to work...they never got fired for those things ><
