So I took a few online classes from Wake Tech this semester...one of my teachers gave me a 90 for participation. I can't figure out how she arrived at a 90 because I turned in all of my assignments and fully participated in both discussion boards. I even made more posts than was required of me for the discussion boards. I've thought about emailing her, but I don't want to seem anal since I got an A in the class anyway. Just wondering if anyone knows how online teachers do participation grades.

I've taken all of my classes online and done far more than the requirements for my discussions, but I still sometimes get 80s and 90s on a few discussions because I may not have "put enough thought into it" or "didn't include real life situations" etc. I wouldn't worry about it considering you made an A

yeah, I wasn't too worried, I was just curious. I got over a a 96 on both discussion boards, so I don't think it had anything to do with quality. I dunno, I just didn't know if there was something I was missing or should have done just in case I take another online class where the teacher grades for participation (this was the only online teacher I had who gave me a participation grade).

I'm of the opinion that I participated in the class when I wrote the check to pay for it. I really dislike things like participation grades.

^^ I agree. I got a freaking 79 in one of my classes for participation. I came to class every day, on time, prepared, and with all of the readings done. I contributed at least once every day, most of the time, to every topic. I specifically tried NOT to monopolize the discussion, because I think those people are asses. But my comments and discussions were always well directed and on-topic. It really pisses me off that I didn't get an A.

Well, I did. We also had to write up a paragraph on what we thought our participation grade should be and why. I put down 92.

Did you do a face-to-face conversation and get results or just do the passive aggressive thing with the letters and whatnot?

Well, I spoke with him about it via email (he's out of town now, I believe in Egypt). And he was very receptive, explained that he had higher standards, and only 1 person received an A grade in participation. The majority of people were at 70 level or lower. So, I know I still did well... but it was 25% of the grade. So, I understand, but still disapointed.
