I tried searching on the graduation website but couldn't find anything. What are we supposed to wear underneath our gown? How do spectators normally dress?

I haven't seen anything that denotes an official requirement . . . but button up shirt, tie, dress pants seems to be standard for a guy

^exactly.

This was asked about to the math adviser and he said most people just show up in shorts and t-shirt underneath.

Where black pants with black shoes and a solid collared shirt. Most people where a tie, but that's not a big deal.

I wore a t-shirt and black flip flops.

But I didn't care that much

You should probably dress nicely.

the only people who really care are your parents who want you to look nice for all the pictures afterwards

wear nice shoes. No sandles or hairy legs Look nice for your folks - they paid for it. Or, if you paid for it yourself, look good for yourself.

only saw 2 guys at the MAE ceremony that weren't dressed up. Most of the guests were even dressed up.

I liked what I was told: Nice pants, button up shirt.

Doesn't have to be too nice, and it's really up to what you're comfortable with. Myself, I'm not comfortable with sitting somewhere that's going to be rather warm with a gown and a funny looking hat and a little thing hanging around my shoulders to begin with. That's why I'm not wearing a tie.

I need to at least be able to breathe while sitting in the mass of writhing bodies.

i graduated several years ago in Dec, i was told it could be chilly since the ice is right under us....so i wore a sweater...no tie, no dress shirt, regular shoes.....graduated like I went to class...and felt 100 times more comfortable then having a tie strangling you. This was several years ago, but there were many others that didnt "dress up"....it isnt like HS graduation, if you are undergrad, they dont care, it is just a show for the masters and doctorate students anyways. I just walked in, took a seat, nothing special at all...and boring like usual.

Yeah I wore tan/khaki.

What?

As long as what's underneath looks good when you take the gown off, roll with that. This isn't a fashion show. We're not a bunch of chowder-loving man-homos. Color coordinating stuff you wear for about 45 minutes is silly.
