I never really got them until recently and it's not like I am just starting to run/be active again. I have still somewhat new basketball shoes that I had no problems with for the past month...

Last week I started getting pain in the shins. Took a week off and then played on Wednesday again this week... It was so painful I couldn't even jump to take a shot or a layup. I have no problem moving laterally though, it's just up and down and forward and backward...

Is there any leg support or sleeve that can help alleviate some of the pain? Or is it simply rest that will help?

I had the devil in my shins once. It sounds like you need to visit a good faith healer.

as far as I've know, there's nothing to really alleviate the pain

but you can start working out your legs more. Stand on an elevated surface with weights in your hands. Do raises on the balls of your feet.

I had them like that when I played basketball as well. Do that foot stretch thing on the wall.

if you play on it, the pain usually goes away

Or they develop into bone fractures..

Best thing to do for shin splints is to stay away from high impact activities (running, jogging, etc) and stretch out you lower leg muscles. Let your legs rest. Your new shoes could be the problem, especially if you have flat feet and they don't have proper arch support.

The only time I get them is when I get a new shoe or when I haven't been running in a month or so, but I usually just get them and just stretch a little before I run the next day and I can usually manage the pain enough to finish. But perhaps I haven't had really severe ones before.

Take paper dixie cups and fill them up with water and freeze them. Then when they are frozen solid tear some of the paper off and just rub the blocks of ice up and down your shins until they're numb. Make sure you leave some of the paper there as something to hold the cups.

i had them bad in high school

make sure you stretch against a wall before playing, but don't play again until they are rested and healed or you'll have to start all over again.
