i like it when they letterbox things that were filmed in 4:3
like a hard day's night
letterbox culture is a double-edged sword 5/10/2008 4:07:02 PM |

really there is no perfect solution. i prefer to watch the show in it's original aspect ratio, even if i have some horizontal or vertical black lines. 5/10/2008 4:13:00 PM |

according to imdb, hard day's night, among like a billion other things, was filmed in 1.37:1. I guess that's what they mean when they list it as the negative ratio. It also lists 1.75:1 as the intended ratio and 1.66:1 as the restored ratio, both of which are letterboxed I guess. 5/10/2008 4:20:11 PM |

there's a tiny bit of letterboxing on the restored edition, and it just ended up looking silly
plus, they redid the songs from the stereo masters but the sound of the film is in mono, so the music sequences sounded silly and out of reality from the rest of the film 5/10/2008 4:25:19 PM |
