Anyone seen that show where they calculate someone's footprint and then teach them how to reduce it? I think it's called Wasted, but I could be confusing that with a commercial that was on for another show while I was watching it. In the one I saw they went to a frat house and tried to teach them about recycling and navy showers and turning off lights and such. It was very marginally effective. 5/11/2008 12:16:13 PM |

I thought it would be cool, but they put a lot of effort into reducing their footprint from something like 60 times what it should have been from their property size to 55 times what it should have been. Not the best way to convince people to live greener. 5/11/2008 12:19:00 PM |

18, which is not suprizing. My apt has an AC unit that is of the type i can't put a programmable thermostat on and there were flights this year.
Otherwise though *shrug* screw it. I'm not becoming vegetarian just because it's a "low carbon" emmision diet. 5/11/2008 1:23:53 PM |

18. because i live in a one bedroom condo and i don't eat very much meat and i haven't flown recently and i live a mile away from school. basically i lead a very boring life yet i still am still way higher than the world's average per person. i guess i could start a compost pile in the middle of my condo's courtyard 5/11/2008 1:32:22 PM |

i drive on average 4 miles per day, and walk wherever possible (i work from my home) when i do drive, my car gets around 25-29mpg, low emissions i grow what i can to eat, don't use pesticides mulch/compost/feed birds with ALL food not eaten recycle everything possible only turn on lights when necessary don't use heat/ac unless the temperature gets below 60 or above 82 in my house (and that is mostly for the safety/comfort of my pets, i don't mind wearing 5 blankets or going naked) only heat/ac rooms i use frequently unplug anything i'm not using, power-save on all computer equipment super low-flow water, have like 50 buckets outside to catch rain never been on a plane i am a very strict vegetarian, eat mostly organic (though i do have a very bad addiction to peanut m&m's)
as far as my occupation goes, i use one of the most eco-friendly printing companies in the US.

Your estimated greenhouse gas emissions are 45 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent per year, which is above the U.S. national average.
To reduce your climate impact, there are many simple things you can change in your everyday behavior that will make a big difference in the fight to slow climate change:

i think mine will go down a lot when i actually have a job and i'm not poor. i would love to buy all organic food but it is way way WAY to expensive for me so i only do it sometimes. and since i'm in a condo i can't exactly have a garden. plus the next car i get WILL be a hybrid unless something better has come out by then (because it might be 100 years before i get a new car). i drive a honda now, but even the newer non-hybrid hondas get way better gas mileage than mine. 5/11/2008 1:38:10 PM |

i wasn't suggesting that it is useless, just that we need to address the biggest problems sooner than later

I thought buying organic food could actually increase your carbon footprint, because the demand for organic food is so high that it is impossible to supply locally. I can't find any figures, but I remember reading that a higher proportion of organic food was imported than "regular" food. 5/11/2008 1:43:22 PM |
khcadwal All American 35165 Posts user info edit post |
i read that too actually i think...now that you mention it
i don't know if it was imported but it might not be locally grown necessarily so big trucks or whatever are still going to have to drive all around to distribute it.

honestly i'm more concerned with eating pesticides than with the fuel used to bring it here as far as organic food goes, i hardly drive anymore, so i count that towards my fuel consumption, hehe. 5/11/2008 2:25:55 PM |

the point isn't to be the most eco-friendly person in the world. some people can't help the fact that they have to drive far to get to a job, they really like eating meat or that maybe they need to fly a few times a year to see family, their job requires it or they just have the opportunity to take a nice vacation and enjoy themselves. shit, i'd fly somewhere warm and sunny right now if i had that much money laying around, everyone deserves a good vacation every once in a while.
the point is to do what you can to minimize your negative impact on the environment. if more people used public transportation or walked/biked, those systems would improve, making it easier on everyone to lessen their usage of natural resources. same with supply and demand, if more people demanded more eco-friendly products, companies would probably produce more of those and less of what is not as desired, and the price of production would drop with the increase in sales.
it's very difficult for one person to start a huge revolution, but if many people do a small part, it's really not that hard.
