I am. Cant go a day without it. Its not that I am addicted in the sense that I crave it, I just can't breathe at all without it.

when i broke my jaw it was wired together for 6 weeks, they gave me some nasal spray in case my nose got really stuffed up (since I couldnt get much air through my mouth), doctor told me it was HIGHLY addictive and that most people are addicted after one use and to only use it if i felt like I really had to

Its not that I am sick really. My nose just closes up if I dont use it. Its not like a cold or anything, and its not real snotty, it just shuts close. I got tired of not ever really being able to taste food. So one day I just said fuck it and decided to use this stuff. Its not that big a deal really. The bottle I use is like $5 and it lasts me a week usually, and my nose is always completely clear.

The only way to get off the stuff is to do it stone cold...

Unfortunately that's the problem with these sorts of drugs. They have a rebound effect -- after the initial dose, your nasal membranes swell, which can be fixed by, you guessed it, taking the drug again. It's a vicious cycle.

I've used the Target brand version of Afrin once; it opened up my nose to the point where it felt like I had air being shoved down my throat when I inhaled. I could see how it would be easy to get addicted.

It is a big deal -- you're chemically burning and destroying the membranes in your nose.

I use nasonex about 2 months out of the year (march and april). It's non-addicting.

As for a cocktail of drugs.....not me. Sure there is the random sickness/bad poison ivy once in a blue moon (been several years at this point). I won't even take tylenol or asprin.

However, some of you do think my supplement list is obsessive. However, everything I take has proven benefits, and is not really that absurd.

yes nasal steroids are highly addictive. There is also saline nasal spray which is useful when your nose is really dry and I've never found it to be addictive.

it might be that your body has brown accustomed to it

not that you're necessarily physiologically addicted to it, per se

when you overuse nasal steroids and the like, the mucous membranes in your nose tend to adapt to having them around... so when you don't use the steroids, they get inflamed like a motherfucker.

I thought that had happened to me recently bbbut nah, my nose was just that fucked up for a while for some reason... I use it maybe once a week now, I usually wake up in the middle of the night with super dry lips and realize my nose is fucked so i'll use a little to get back to sleep

I have never even heard of the idea that nasal spray could be habit forming before reading this thread.

I think I have used it maybe twice in my life.

There was a King of Queens episode where Aurthur becomes addicted to nasal spray.

That is how it starts, soon it will be two bottles a week and will cost you 10 dollars. Next thing you know you're fired from your job giving hand jobs for a quick fix. You people make me sick.

Untrue. I had a problem with nose spray back in high school after a pretty nasty sinus infection. I tried quitting cold turkey, but that was really miserable. I kept sneaking little puffs of spray here and there to breathe. I eventually decided to just dilute the nose spray a little at the time and eventually I managed to get off of it.

I did some research recently since my father-in-law has gotten addicted to nose spray after having a stroke. Now there are actually several products/systems out there that methodically dilute the spray and wean you off of your dependence.

http://nasalsprayaddiction.net/

Now, I stick to a saline sinus wash (Neti Pot) instead and avoid nose spray like the plague.

[Edited on May 12, 2008 at 2:10 PM. Reason : Neti!]

Have you ever tried using claritin, zyrtec, singuair, etc? I take a Claritin every single day, and its the only way during this time of year that I am not wiping snot all day. I tried taking Singulair last week 3 days in a row while I think I had a minor cold/sinus issue - it did nothing for me.

My dad was addicted to it for a long time, but he fought the good fight and has been clean for several years now.

I have been using it every day for over 3 years. My dad has used it for over 2 decades. And as someone posted, I am not addicted to it in the sense that I crave it, I just have to use it if I don't want my nose to be completely shut.
