so I'm cleaning out my room (packing for a move) and I found an old paycheck from my job last summer

its not quite a year old - can I still deposit this?

if it turns out the check has been canceled will my bank charge me any sort of fee for trying?

contact your former employer and have them cut you a new check.

I thought checks were good for a year. You could call the company and ask. They should know if the check is any good or not.

well if I just tried to deposit it would there be any potential penalty if it didn't go through?

Not if you just go to the teller and ask.

I lost one of my checks from State once, and when I got the new one they made me sign something saying if I ever found the old one I wouldn't try to deposit it. Not sure what would have happened if I actually did, though.

^^ why would they bother? you can cancel check #s so that they are worthless. its what you do if you lose a checkbook or had to send 2 big checks cause one got lost.

I don't know why. They just did. It's the state - maybe they were too lazy to cancel it.
