Quote : | "The state fined six Wake County stores more than $12,000 after inspectors found too many discrepancies between their advertised prices and the prices that rung up at the register.
Three of the six stores had paid previous fines for price-scanning errors.
The retailers were notified after random price-scanner inspections found an error rate of 2 percent or higher. They were fined after failing follow-up inspections.
Inspectors with the the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Standards division regularly test retailers’ scanning systems to make sure shoppers aren’t being gouged.
The six stores fined were:
• Compare Foods at 2215 New Hope Church Road in Raleigh, which paid $450 and had an error rate of 4 percent in its first inspection and 2.67 percent in its second. Since the time the inspections were completed, that store has become an International Foods location.
• Rite Aid at 1910 Falls Valley Road in Raleigh, which paid $1,290 after having a 5 percent error rate in its first inspection and a 4 percent error rate in its second.
• Staples at 2950 Millbrook Road in Raleigh, which paid $750 after having a 12 percent error rate in its first inspection and a 3 percent error rate in its second.
• Kmart at 4500 Western Blvd. in Raleigh, which paid $2,855 after failing a third inspection, in which it had a 10.33 percent error rate. The store paid a $2,595 fine in December.
• Staples at 11825 Retail Drive in Wake Forest, which paid $3,115 after failing a third inspection with an error rate of 8.33 percent. The store had already paid a $1,500 penalty for the first two failed inspections.
• Kmart at 6200 Capital Blvd. in Raleigh, which paid $4,155 after inspectors found an error rate of 12 percent in that store’s fifth inspection. The store had already been assessed $7,935 in fines for the previously failed inspections.
The money collected by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Standards division goes to the state’s school systems. "" |
