I went to the doctor today at UNC and couldn't make a right hand turn to get to the parking deck because a pedetrian had been hit while crossing the road. There was a UNC campus bus parked in the roped off area, so I think that may have been what hit the person. Channel 11 was there filming. The nurse today said about 2 months ago someone called her to cancel an appointment because they had hit a runner near the hospital who didn't look before crossing the street.
How come no one ever gets killed, or hurt playing frogger at NC State, but they always do at UNC? 5/15/2008 3:00:35 PM |

It's part of a sense of entitlement. Since pedestrians have the right of way, some feel that they don't have to look before they cross the street--often to their peril. 5/15/2008 3:09:13 PM |

I'll be honest, I've had my brush with death too. Don't stand next to the light post when you get ready to cross the street because it creates a blind spot and you can't see the van that is about to run over you. 5/15/2008 3:15:15 PM |

pedestrian has the right of way, i understand. i NEVER assume i have the right of way though, because cars are much bigger and stronger than i am. people at unc CONSTANTLY fail to realize this. i live in carrboro and deal with it every day 5/15/2008 3:25:00 PM |

^ That and Carolina has a higher percentage of people from up north, where they truly believe pedestrians have the right of way.
My girlfriend went to the College of Charleston for a semester and she said she was always seeing stupid yankee girls talking on their cell phone, walking in front of oncoming traffic, expecting them to stop, and getting pissed when people would have to slam on their brakes to avoid hitting them.

Pedestrians DO have the right of way, but that doesn't mean they should walk in front of a speeding car.
^^enough with the stereotypical crap, unless those "yankee" girls are from big cities then they act the same as anyone else, b/c you don't have to deal with that crap in a suburban atmosphere.

That happened right outside my building.... I didn't see or hear anything tho since I was in the lab. Most the time people are good about stopping at that crosswalk, especially the buses. 5/15/2008 4:03:21 PM |

^Do the runners always stop though? The N&O said she was on the sidewalk running and the bus was parked on the street when I drove by, so I am gussing it is her fault that she was hit. She probably didn't look before crossing the street. 5/15/2008 4:05:52 PM |

What in the hell are you talking about? Anyone with half a brain knows better than to walk out in front of a moving car. It's not like this knowledge is limited to those living in urban areas. It's just that the ones from the urban areas for some reason think they're entitled to walk in front of traffic, and have the traffic stop for them.5/15/2008 4:18:07 PM |

^ Most downtown Charleston streets are one way and are too narrow to worry about the flashing lights. They just have crosswalks. Which isn't usually a problem, unless someone assumes that just because they've entered the crosswalk, the car 30 ft away doing 35 miles per hour should stop so that they can walk across. 5/15/2008 4:23:05 PM |

^ I was referring specifically to the girls in Charleston. Even more specifically to the ones who almost got hit by cars because they were talking on their cell phones and weren't paying attention, and who, after almost being hit, berated the drivers in loud yankee accents.
Did my statement generalize? Yes. I didn't mean for it too. Sorry.

UNC's campus is full of self-absorbed idiots who don't look at all before walking into the street. I can't even begin to count the times I've almost hit someone jumping in front of me from a blind spot or in the middle of the night there. 5/15/2008 6:00:33 PM |

^^Regardless, you can't count on a vehicle not hitting you. As a pedestrian, you can't just assume they will stop, because if you are wrong, you'll die. 5/15/2008 8:35:22 PM |

I used to work at UNC and those campus cops are serious about crosswalks. If you blow through one in a car with a pedestrian standing there, the cops will write you a ticket. In addition, unlike here at State, the cops stop auto traffic at specific crosswalks during peak times of pedestrian movement.
Even though UNC does suck, we could use some of that type traffic control at crosswalks on State's campus. Specifically, I'm thinking when everybody's moving in the mornings over by Broughton and Bureau of Mines, maybe?

I feel for those who knew her, but you always ALWAYS ALWAYS look before you cross. Never assume someone will stop because they could be looking down and changing their radio stations, blabbing on the phone, or screwing with their mp3 player. 5/16/2008 5:43:34 AM |

That seems to contradict with this then:
Quote : | "The accident happened southeast of the intersection of South Columbia Street. There was no crosswalk at the point of the impact, police said." |
If there is no crosswalk, then there is nothing (I'm assuming) that officially designates that pedestrians have the right of way.5/16/2008 5:46:11 AM |

But seriously. My parents taught me to look both ways before crossing the street when I was like fucking 6. All the douche bags who think they can walk out into the street with no consequence were failed by their parents or have no fucking brain.
Car > You 100% of the time. Better to err on the side of caution I would think than try to walk out in the street just because you can. 5/16/2008 6:10:56 AM |
