I ask because my mom lives in an area where the HD service is not yet implemented, however she does have an HDTV (she bought it expecting to get the HD channels, but did not find out until AFTER she bought the TV that the HD service was not available in her area yet) and has the cable running through a coaxial cable, and if an HDMI cable would make it look any better I will buy her one. I have tried to Google, but I can't find exactly what I am looking for. Please help, thanks!

can she not get DirectTV or dishNetwork? I don't know for sure but I would assume any where that directTV is available so are the HD channels.

HD service isn't implemented?

HDMI alone isn't gonna do shit probably.. she can get over the air local HD channels with just an antenna

also, directv and dishnetwork are both probably available and will have HD channels

^I'm guessing if she doesn't have HD cable available then there probably isn't anything within range of her home with over-the-air hd.

logic. If you have a shitty source to begin with there is really not much you can do to make it better.

I've tried the same thing back in the day too and the picture really didn't improve all that much

basically, you can't improve the picture (as stated above)...all you can do is minimize degradation between the source and the display and i really don't think the HDMI will make a noticeable difference (though i daresay that it is, technically, better)

Im trying to figure out where the HDMI cable would go still. You use coaxial from the wall to the TV it sounds like...where the fuck would an HDMI cable go? Even if you have a digital cable box you didnt mention, if theres no HD service, I seriously doubt they gave you a box with an HDMI port.

I am shocked that any reasonable person in this thread would actually think that anyone posting in this thread has no idea between coaxial of HDMI cable inputs, or whether or not a box was outfitted with an HDMI output or not. Thats not even an insult of another intelligence, its actually a reflection of your own broken thinking. I asked one simple question - Do you think an HDMI would improve picture quality over (as in better) a coaxial cable, no matter how so, yes or no.

Just think for two seconds how could one have an HD box in there home and not have HD service... just think... that dim flicker in your brain just might light up brightly. With that said, I'll go else where were grow-ups answer questions and not children. But, thanks to all that gave a serious reply, really I mean that.

I guess a DVR box doesn't allow HD channels to pass to the screen, if there was HD service.

When did I ever make such argument? I was asking will it, I NEVER said that I thought it would. If I did, show it to me. Furthermore, I was just trying to make this a thought provoking session about the qualities of something that I don't seem to remember being discussed. And, in addition to this, I was going to buy the cord most likely anyway, so if and when they get HD service there, a proper set-up will be in place to welcome it.

Also, HDMI has been discussed on this board hundreds of times. Use a search next time.

In your first post, you say "has the cable running through a coaxial cable"...I think most would infer that you have a coaxial cable running directly from the wall to the TV from that.

So you have an HD box apparently...congrats...that means either you have some crazy cable provider that somehow supplies HD boxes with no HD service, or you bought an HD TiVO/other brand DVR yourself. In the first, Id be willing to bet the HDMI ports are inactive, and in the second, why the fuck would you buy an HD TiVO without doing a little research into it, ie finding out if it will even work with your cable provider.

No one has discussed this before because it's a retarded question that anyone with any knowledge of television systems and/or audiovisual equipment would know the answer to. You have standard cable coming in over coax. It looks shitty. By using a cable meant to transmit high definition video and audio, you will not make the signal look better. The cable is still coming in over coax as an analog signal. It will always be the weak link in the chain. The reason HD and digital channels look better is because... brace yourself... THEY'RE DIGITAL - as in, will not degrade over coax.

How would you even hook up an HDMI cable? I guess I'll assume you have a cable box... and if your provider doesn't offer HD, I'd be very surprised if there were an HDMI (or DVI) port on the box.

I was going to leave this thread alone, but I want to come back just to point out more self-ownage:

Pointing out typos on message boards are really really showing you brain muscle. I guess typos render a sentence useless. Haha.

Quote :
"it's a retarded question"

There is never such this as a retarded or stupid question. If it goes unasked, then thats retarded or stupid,, but not the question itself.

Quote :
"oh, and did you even try google?"

Haha. Did you actually read my first post or did you just jump on the bandwagon of insulters, and self-owners? Refer to the following quote pulled from the very first post:

Quote :
"I have tried to Google, but I can't find exactly what I am looking for."

PS, I asked for an answer for this question nicely

Quote :
"Please help, thanks!"

And look what it turned into... a bunch of savage replies, in turn I had to act accordingly to point out the self-ownage, and made out to look like an asshole. Good job humans.

With that said I am leaving this thread this time, unless I have to point out more ownage.

Have a great day and thanks for the kicks and giggles!

the only one getting self-owned is yourself.
You asked a kind of reasonable question (to which the simple answer is "no"), then when people started asking perfectly legitimate questions, because your question as stated was incomplete, you went off the deep end.

Nobody in this thread except for you has made an invalid point

If the answer to the base question is no, no matter what else was involved or left empty, that should have settled it and no other questioning was needed. Irregardless, if I even had an improper set-up, if the answer was no, thats all I wanted to know. You remember in SAW how Jigsaw told the officer to follow the rules and he would get his son back, think about this way, I asked only ONE question in my original post that only needed one answer, and look at it now, likewise look at what happened to the officer. This is how wars or mayhem is started.
