We're going to Cancun for a week and I'm just wondering, for those of you that have been out of the country on vacation, what's the likelihood that my cell phone will work in Cancun? I'd like to be able to call family when I first get there, just to let them know I arrived OK. Plus my best friend is going to give birth soon, and if she does it while I'm there, I'd really like to be notified!
Anyone know if my Alltel phone is going to work in Cancun, and most importantly, how expensive it will be? 5/17/2008 11:24:25 AM |

^we're going to be there for a week, but we're going to call our parents and let them know we arrived OK. no long drawn out conversations, just a "hey, we landed safely, we're gonna go get drunk and get sunburnt, see ya in a week"

just get a calling card, they're not that expensive and can usually be used internationally.
I'm pretty sure if your friend has a kid you don't NEED to know the second it happens. Just wait til you get home. 5/17/2008 2:08:37 PM |

Why pay for a calling card? Alltel lets you use your US cell phone in Mexico for free.5/18/2008 8:01:49 PM |

I called Alltel today, and this is not true. IF I were able to get a signal in Mexico, standard Alltel roaming charges would apply, in addition to any roaming charges that Mexico wanted to charge me.
However, since most cell phones are Digital now, and most of Mexico is on Analog, it's doubtful I'd be able to get a signal to even make a call. SOLUTION: We are getting a cheap calling card. 5/19/2008 6:50:14 PM |

most of the large cities in mexico and canada support US phones, but check with your provider about intl. charges, and if need be sign up for an unlimited plan, even if just for a week 5/19/2008 7:11:24 PM |

I go down to Cancun once a year and have no problem making cell phone calls. It can cost you though 5/20/2008 8:51:29 AM |

who is your service provider? i had a feeling that cancun being such an american tourist trap would help make it easier to get cell phone reception... 5/20/2008 10:42:04 AM |

I am with Verizon and I got perfect reception down there. It didn't cost me too much because I think a lot of plans cover Mexico and Canada. i am not sure how Alltel would work down there, I would assume just fine. I never wanted to put up with the hassle of a calling card and half of the pay phones down there are pieces of shit and you can't understand what they are saying because it's either Spanish or the reception is bad.
ps. when are you going down there? I am heading down the 12th of June and staying at the Oasis

omg how cool is this? we're heading down this friday (23rd) and staying for a week at the Grand Oasis. it's the same resort as you, only it costs more because we get to stay in the pyramid in the center (instead of the outer buildings) and we can utilize all the bars/restaurants on-site, whereas the Oasis guests are restricted to certain bars/restaurants. i think that's really the only difference though. the whole resort looks beautiful, and we've never been out of the country - i'm super excited!
