Since when does it cost $40 to mount and balance one tire!!
245/45/18 with TPMS stems......$40 per tire at Discount Tires
I bought two slightly used (less that 500 miles) tires and wanted to have them put on. Damn $40 a tire!! 5/20/2008 8:20:44 AM |

18" tires arent exactly the easiest tires out there to mount ('specially a 245). unless the machine is $1million, then they gotta make their money back.
dont be surprised, lots of other places would charge you more than their normal fee for mounting an 18" tire.

well yeah i agree its pretty high.
i forgot how much we charged for tire mount/balance but it was typically couple bucks more for bigger rims.
but yeah, def. not $40.
why did you goto discount tire? did you not know the price before hand? 5/20/2008 9:18:19 AM |

I am 100% sure I did not pay 40/tire when I got mine installed last fall, 235/50/18. I don't remember exactly how much it was, but I think it was somewhere in the 20's. This was at the Crossroads NTB. 5/20/2008 12:27:12 PM |

that's a little high, but not outrageous for a bigger rim/low profile tire. what kind of balance? static or force? were they putting them on the car and resetting the sensors also? all that adds up. 5/20/2008 12:49:39 PM |

I was shopping around for mount and ballance and one of the places I stopped was at Just Tires. The tires I was looking at were 255/30/19. They wanted $25 a piece if I bought them there, and $58 if I brought them in. I laughed and left.
The cheapest place I have found in Raleigh/ Cary/ Garner is Duty Tire off of tryon. $25 total for 2 of the tire size mentioned above. 5/20/2008 1:07:19 PM |

^there used to be a couple of kids that worked up there that had built toyota minitrucks. same crowd? i used to deliver pizzas to one of them's house (right around the corner from joel) and went 4 wheeling with them a couple of times.
you might consider calling one of the local performance shops that deal with nice stuff day in and day out. the last similar tires i had mounted on rims i actually care about was a pair of 305/35/r18's. i opted to have r.p.m. in garner do them vs. some chain store tire jockey. i think it was $40 plus tax, and that was with them taking the wheels on/off the car too. well worth it for the peace of mind that the tire bead wouldn't be damaged and my rims wouldn't be scuffed. 5/20/2008 3:57:00 PM |

That's like an $80 part if it gets broken......they want to make enough profit to cover the risk.......otherwise they will be more than happy to throw you the peace sign5/20/2008 8:56:40 PM |

thats why shops that know what they are doing dont charge for that, what if you took your car in for an oil change and they wanted to charge you $300, in case the plug stripped and they had to replace the pan

^wrong. you pay for the tpms, just like you pay for some to diagnose a problem with your car. sure they know what they are doing but they have to use specific tools for it. tpms on some cars requires the use of a magnetic tool to recalibrate the computer in the wheel. also its going to be manditory in all new cars as of dec 08 (dont quote me on that, might be a month or two off) and if the goberment is makin money off it then tire shops will too. 5/20/2008 10:43:57 PM |

ford, chevy, chrysler, nissan, MB,VW most newr models have the sensor built into the wheel or a ring aroung th inside of it. "tpms" that is. the tahoes do not use the hand head device. you flicker the headlights a few times and then let air out of tire until the horn blows.5/21/2008 3:44:06 PM |

So, when I was working at my shop, the snap-on man convinced management to buy a TPMS resetting tool. It was a brick with buttons on it that was bright green. Never saw it once it was purchased and stuck in our cabinet.
95%, I would guess, of the vehicles can be reset through some system integrated into the car. 5/22/2008 2:14:51 PM |

the best part is when the retard busting the tire down doesnt pay attention to the tpms, and fucks it up with the bead braker on the machine. 5/22/2008 2:26:57 PM |

heck, if you arent sure, just dont bust it near the stem, and dont rotate near it either. 5/22/2008 3:31:18 PM |

you at least got one thing right. there's a handful of vehicles that use a sensor that's strapped to the wheel. i know you think fords are God and are all that fit in your tiny little brain, but that doesn't equal anywhere near "most" vehicles.5/22/2008 3:47:34 PM |
