I've been keeping up with this a little bit, and was curious about who was following it.

I have a lot of information at home, but I'm at work so I'll just post a link to a recent story about the law and FORS (Families For Roadside Safety)

So do you follow the law? Why or why not?

It basically states that you must change lanes away from an emergency vehicle, with their emergency lights on (police, fire, ems, tow, IMAP, etc). If you can't change lanes, you are to slow to a speed that would allow you to stop fast enough to avoid collisions or injury

I've done it myself plenty of times - on city roads, I pull over and stop to let the emergency vehicle pass, and on the highway I pull into the right lane and slow.

I thought this law was in effect years ago though.

You should do this to any vehicle stopped close to the edge of the road or in the road. Dont fly past people broken down at 50mph, its just stupid. That they have to make a law for it just shows how fucking dumb and inconsiderate the people in this state can be (not limited to this state, I'd wager).

no its when they're on the side of the road that you're supposed to move into the fast lane and maintain speed or slow down to 35 or less in the slow lane as you pass.

i picked it up when i lived in va several years ago and it was law there

made perfect sense, and still do it now in states where it's not a law

just seems courteous

Oh yeah, and along with broken down vehicles, I also change lanes to pass someone who's been pulled over. I try to give them at least one lane of space between them and myself in case someone's drunk and doing that line-walking test.

5^this law is in regards to emergency vehicles stopped on the road, not ones in transit. i always pull OFF the road (where possible) when I see an emergency vehicle with lights on, in transit

Yes, its been law for several years. Why WOULDN'T someone follow this law? You have to be a complete dick to not be courteous about this, lol.

The guy that owned the first place I ever worked at got trapped by some cops for this when it was just becoming a law. One cop had pulled over a semi and was on the right side of the road with his lights flashing. There was another cop behind some trees on the median that he saw without its lights on, so he stayed in the right lane thinking that the other cop might have been assisting and was about to pull onto the highway. He slowed down and passed the cop and semi in the right lane, then the median cop turns on his lights and pulls him over. He tried to explain to the cop that he thought he was about to pull onto the highway, he understood the new law, etc. and the cop was just a dick to him about it.

Just because it's the law to be somewhat safe doesn't mean I don't try to be as safe as possible.

^ of course not. they usually are way over in the grass or have a white marker. its the vehicles having trouble or close to the line that pulled over recently with people in them. and any police vehicle or emergency. pretty much any car with people in it you should slow down or move over for just in case.

I have always done this and not just for emergency vehicles. But anyone on the side of the road changing a tire, hitch hiking, construction workers, etc.

my friend kind of got trapped in this down here in atlanta

she was taking an exit (so only one lane) and there was a cop there that had just finished pulling someone over. he gave her a ticket which required a court appearance and said that she should have moved over a lane (but there was not one there). anyway, she decided to contest it, the cop didnt show up so the judge rescheduled. the cop kept not showing up 6 times and finally the judge dismissed it


though, it should be stated that this friend, knowing her, was probably just under the legal limit and i'm sure did not slow down at all....which she should have done

Ever since I saw signs back in either SC or GA a few years ago that said, "Let 'em work, Let 'em live" (talking about highway workers), I've made an effort to always slow down for both workers and emergency vehicles - but NOT to the point of rubber necking. Those people piss me off... especially when my side of the highway is slow when there's a wreck on the other side.

THIS LAW IS A VIOLATION OF MY RIGHT TO DRIVE IN WHICHEVER LANE I WANT TO. I AM ENTITLED TO HAVE FULL MANEUVERABILITY OF MY VEHICLE WHENEVER IT IS CONVENIENT FOR ME.
