just remember: optical zoom means everything, digital means nothing...glass is relatively important (zeiss and leica are the only two i have experience with)...and image stabilization is key (trust me, you'll care at some point)

If you want to spend a little more, I'd say go with the Canon Powershot SD870IS. Wide-angle lens (starts at 28mm rather than 35), lots of controls, image stabilized, big and bright screen. 8 MP, 3.8x zoom, and quite compact. $259.99 on Newegg.

i wouldn't even consider something with less than 7x optical, and even then, 10x is preferred

if you're looking at ~$160, go with a panasonic DMC-TZ1:

5mp
10x optical
image stabilization
leica optics
movie mode

the TZ4 is $100 more and is 8.1mp

I've had 3 elphs and have loved every single one.

first I lost after a year.
2nd I thought died after 4 years, turned out to be the CF card but had already purchased my SD900 so I gave it to my sister.

Current is the SD900. 10MP is freaking SWEEET b/c you get a LOT of information and detail in every picture just b/c it's HUGE. however I don't recommend the 900 b/c it doesn't have IS and anything within 10feet or so at full res you can see blur where you clicked the button.

Elphs are SOLID and fit nicely in your pocket.

whatever you go with, make sure:

1) it has a rechargeable battery I.e. doesn't use AA's
2) has image stabilization
3) you have the choice between large optical zoom and fitting in your pocket. I personally would never take my camera anywhere if it didn't fit in my pocket and I don't need anything beyond 3x zoom expecially with 10MP... of course I do have plans for an SLR at some point...

haven't used this camera but saw a good deal listed at hot-deals.org

Kodak C713 Digital Camera for $80 + tax

Additionally, add a Epson R280 Photo Printer for $100, and a $100 Easy Rebate (08-12521) is available when purchased with the camera.
