highly unlikely. at least one that's not beat to hell. the cheapest ones would probably be older honda aquatrax's. i think they came out in 02, but even those are probably still bringing $5k+ probably considering they were $9-10k new.

Yeah soo i think BBR is right i think a gp1200 or a 1300 would be best for what i'd like....

Ohh to have the time/ability/money to do the rxp motor swap on a yamaha hull



So from what i've found so far... the turbo hondas are slow... due to hull & pump not being set up for speed. Seadoos get you really really wet but have the most hp on the water (and cost more than i can afford) Yamaha has the fastest/ best hulls but don't have the hp lead anymore. Kawis are heavy and don't have great hulls but make lots of power and use lots of gas.

So as much as i'd prefer a 4 stroke i'm thinking the gp12/13 may be the way to go.

i wouldn't even think about a 4 stroke unless i was buying something brand new or had specific requirements for noise/emissions.

good luck finding a gp1300 with that budget either. you MIGHT could luck up and find a gp1200r, but a regular gp1200 in good shape is much more realistic...

if speed is all you're after, you could probably score a wave raider 1100 real cheap. they're every bit as fast as the gp1200 in a straight line and you're still getting yamaha durability/reliability. the gp hull is far superior for handling though.

the kaw ultra 150's are actually the top speed kings in your price range. in fact, they're "unofficially" the reason for the "unofficial" agreement between all the manufacturers not to break the 70mph barrier. i used to ride with a guy at falls that had one when my gp1200 was stock. i could run him out of the hole, but he'd catch me on the top end by a good 2-3mph.

the seadoo rx/xp's are excellent performing skis too, and i love the size for flicking around in coves, etc. their one downfall imo is any sort of rough water performance though. not only do they accelerate and handle poorly in chop, they will beat you to death and your arms will be hanging dislocated at the shoulder after each ride. i'd look real hard at them for strictly a lake/smooth water unit though.

anyway, all that random info aside an older gp1200 is still going to be tops on the list of doing almost everything better than the competition at that pricepoint. there's a reason they've been so dominate in the ijsba, etc. over the years.

i'm going to assume you're talking about norman. yes, for that price i wouldn't consider anything but a gp hull for there. i MIGHT go for a kaw ultra 150 if it was priced like out of date meat, but it'd have to be one hell of a deal on anything else.

if you're interested in a project, i've been considering selling my 99 gp1200 in favor of a big block v8 jet boat. it needs the shortblock rebuilt and possibly one cylinder sleeved or just a whole new cylinder. it injested some water while doing some tricks that involved submerging it. i think the seat seal had gotten kinked, allowing water to come in right on the carbs.

everything else is in good shape with low hours and it's got all the right parts. pro cool head w/ interchangeable domes, solas impeller, ride plate, intake grate, brushed aluminum flame arrestors, converted to premix, etc. it's been radared in the low 70's on glass freshwater, but where it really shines is take off, acceleration, transition, and hooking up in chop or off a wake/wave. a different impeller could be swapped to get it into the mid-high 70's, but you'd trade off some of the awesome performance elsewhere.

i had a 97 GP760 for the longest time...I absolutely loved yamaha's line....i never felt as in control riding sea-doos because of their thumb throttle, it's hard to hang on and do tricks if you're using your thumb for throttle all the time, and the wrist strap on the yamahas felt more secure than the safety attached to the vest...just preference i guess, the rooster tail is yamaha only too i think if that's your thing, I disengaged it since I'd often do shit on the back end and didn't want the stream to poke me in the balls

go for a Yamaha GPXXX...I'd only rode a 1200 once, it's great if you just wanna go fast in a straight line...at 225lbs the 760 worked excellent for me in doing some cool spins/submarines etc etc

we sold our 97 GP760 for like 1300 2yrs ago...ran great...ate up a ton of oil, no major mechanical problems, only minor scratches and a tiny crack in the fiberglass from running into a dock(sister)

^^not much to the average rider. the gpr was mainly yamaha's response of hull revisions to keep their top spot in factory stock racing and secondarily to keep up with the general trend of musclecrafts growing in size and power for the open market. when yamaha blew everyone out of the water with the wave raider 1100 in 1994, it sparked a competition within the pwc industry to keep coming with bigger/faster/stronger models for racing and recreation. much like the muscle car era, race replica sport bikes, etc.

technically speaking, like ^ said the gpr puts out about 20 more hp. however, that's mostly offset by a weight increase. the main improvements were to the handling and performance in offshore type conditions. it's definitely a noticeable difference between the gp/gpr for flat out running across rough water or through a course. for general all purpose riding, jumping, etc. i prefer the saved weight and size of the gp. if you really have the need to improve the already good manners of it on adverse surfaces, it's nothing a couple of aftermarket parts won't do.

it's largely just a matter of personal opinion though, strictly comparing the numbers and data outside of racing conditions there's not enough actual difference to declare one or the other superior.

pretty good deal. i'd be curious as to just what's affected on the guage panel though. they have that key code security crap integrated in, so it might be locked up. you can reset the code easily enough, but it doesn't do you much good if the buttons are dead. could just bypass it entirely i guess.

havent looked at it much but I know SBT: http://www.sbtontheweb.com/ has the best deals on WARRANTIED engines around.. I kicked myself for not going with them when I rebuilt mine.. I ended up messing up a main seal and wasted more time/money than it was worth fixing it.. I should have just went with them to begin with

Yeah I have to kind of agree. After the novelty wears off they aren't as fun as you think they'll be. Sure getting a pair of them out with a bunch of friends for an afternoon is great fun but I dunno, I had more fun with the last boat I had (LS2000 jetboat) than the jetski's before that

yeah i kinda feel the same but i'd rather have a nice ski rather than a pos boat.. but then again with gas prices the way they are... just floating and swimming sounds like fun...

boats are fun, but i like jumping waves and wakes on a ski, and you aren't going to get a boat for $4000 that will run 70 mph and be useable in anything other than calm water.

ok bumped to 5k now.. are the gp 1200s decently reliable ? i'm thinking about an fx140 too i know they're not really fast but they're 4 stroke and dead nuts reliable.

yeah, very reliable. however, i would remove the oil injection (run premix) and remove the choke in favor of a primer. what's the hang up on wanting a 4 stroke?

Aww man...I knew of a mint GP1300R on a galvanized trailer for $5k when you first posted this thread, but it is already sold. Would have been a good pick if you were willing to go $5k in the first place.

The 1300 block is going to be very expensive by itself. Places like SBT hit you with a $500-$1000 core charge when you order one of their engines. They do not have a program that will allow you to buy a 1300 block and send in a 1200 as a replacement.

It is very hard on them, but that's why you keep everything lubricated, spray down all the metal parts with WD-40, and flush it with fresh water after each ride.

It's all about how it is maintained. I would avoid used skis that have been in salt water unless I knew the person very well and trusted them to maintain it, but I would run my own in salt if I felt like doing it.

i think you can get more than enough compression out of the heads to not need dome pistons... this guy had 2 sets of heads.. the other required race gas.

that's the way most of the performance heads are. they're quick change domes, only takes about 20-30 minutes to swap them out. i've got one set for 93 and another for 110.
