Really? Let me know when you find a cheaper 42" 1080P LCD than that. I'll concede that tax will be about 50 bucks- but freight shipping from most online resellers is going to be about 150. Sure, some places offer free shipping even on TV's, but you still pay for it in the end. 5/26/2008 4:52:17 PM |

find a NEW 1080p 42" lcd/plasma tv for less than even $900 from some place even somewhat reputable or some place where you could return it for free.
exactly. 5/26/2008 4:53:18 PM |

i'm a bit disappointed that i JUST bought a 42" 720p samsung plasma for $783 before tax, but thems the breaks
also, only 2 HDMI is bordering on a being a deal-breaker for me (though you could always just buy an HDMI switch for $30)

that plasma probably looks better. 1080p but contrast, response rate and so on probably below average. 5/26/2008 5:57:26 PM |

see, now i'm not sure...i JUST bought the samsung, and i'm well within my return period, so i COULD return it...i have about $35 in reward zone best buy bucks (or whatever they're called) so i COULD (in theory), get it for more than $100 less than the plasma

The only real reason to deal with changing them out are if you plan on using the TV with a computer too. Also, doesn't bestbuy charge a restocking fee for stuff like that? 5/26/2008 7:02:14 PM |

The Insignia LCD there looks like complete crap. The only thing it would be suitable for would be games, because the hi-res digital source will look pretty good despite the other flaws of the TV. 5/26/2008 7:40:41 PM |

I've looked at Insignia lcd's in store before and always thought they looked like crap. Definitely bottom of the barrel lcd's. 5/26/2008 10:12:30 PM |

you know, most of the lcd's in the store look like crap with out of the box settings. I must say that when using the vicuiti calibration dvd, the settings to get this tv looking right were WAY aware from the stock settings. I mean, I guess I'll refrain from posting deals to ungrateful dickbags in the future. It's not like I'm selling it. It's a good deal for the money, if like it or feel its worth the hassle of getting it home to try it, go for it. I was skiddish myself, but upon hooking it up to the ps3, it's phenomenal with a 1080p source. It doesn't deinterlace as well as my olevia so feeding it 720p cable instead of 1080i is preferable. The compressed signal of twc fucks both of them either way. this thread was purely a public service announcement. 5/26/2008 10:23:33 PM |

Just because something is cheap doesn't mean it's a "deal." You would essentially have to resolve to accept this TVs flaws to buy it. 5/26/2008 10:59:15 PM |

you're just not going to find as good of deals overall at best buy as you will at other places on the interweb

i don't understand
on a related note, i got home and played a little assassin's creed and realized that it looks better than the 42" lcd (not 1080p, though) that i HAD been using...so i'm sticking with the plasma 5/26/2008 11:11:35 PM |

best buy had the 42" Sharp Aquos on sale for the same price as all the online places. Difference was you didn't have to pay shipping and wait over a week for the tv. AND you get reward zone points.5/27/2008 12:30:19 AM |

There is more to a TV than the picture quality. I learned a long time ago that if you buy the cheapest TV in a certain category you'll usually end up with a piece of shit.
The sound quality of cheap TVs has always been my biggest complaint. They tend to be too quiet when people on TV are talking and way too loud when anything exciting happens on screen. As a result I sit there turning it up and down the whole time. It's annoying as hell and it's a problem that you just don't have if you buy a decent TV.
I know most people that buy a flat panel will have a surround system as well, but there is something to be said for just turning on the TV and watching it during normal usage. I'm not wasting my time running a surround system for normal TV viewing, so decent sound is a requirement. 5/27/2008 12:44:39 PM |

^^I press the same button for turning on the tv and for turning on the stereo. TV through big speakers is way better than tv through crap built-in bullshit. 5/28/2008 9:36:33 AM |

actually, since i'm in the process of moving and haven't gotten the lines run for my surround sound yet, i've been using the speakers built into the samsung...i think they sound pretty good, especially with the fake surround setting on...no, it doesn't beat the true surround sound, but it works well 5/28/2008 1:37:42 PM |

I use my stereo mostly for listening to CD's. Therefore, I would not only have to turn it on, but also switch it to the TV setting. And half the time the TV input is set up for "Stereo" instead of "Surround" because I put it there when I'm blasting one of the music channels on digital cable while I'm doing other stuff around the house. Not to mention the whole "two remotes or one remote" thing.
I guess I give far less of a fuck about this stuff than a lot of my peers. I just want to turn on the tv and flip through the channels 95% of the time and I won't buy anything that gets in the way of being able to do that. I didn't know you need surround sound to watch Maury or The Simpsons.
It's funny that I, as the person who doesn't really care about this shit, am the person advocating buying a nicer TV.
