http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/05/27/mccain.speech/index.html

Quote :
" He voiced explicit support for the U.N. Security Council and International Atomic Energy Agency as well as an updated Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty."

Quote :
" It was noticeably more conciliatory toward Russia than the one in March, when McCain proposed ejecting the country from the Group of Eight nations. McCain did not mention the United Nations in his March speech.

McCain gave qualified support to an international treaty banning the testing of nuclear weapons, the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, which he opposed in the Senate in 1999. "

I do like this new attitude he's taking, but why is he pulling such a 180 on this?

So that he can try to take over the world!

It's just positioning. Flip flopping is a popular thing to do, and the American voting public seems to fall for it often around election time. Then, after that, the politicians will just slowly reverse all those things that they did a 180 on and piss off 1/4 of their voting base (the ones who are paying attention) and the other 3/4's will just be happy that they voted for what they wanted. Or something like that. I'm being bitter and have a blood sugar hangover.

am i reading the quotes wrong... or is this thread trying to say he's a flip-flopper because he changed his mind 9 years later?

On one issue, the other issue he significantly changed his tone towards 'kicking russia out of g8' to working with them. That speech was in march.

yeh that was crazy. i watched that speech and he was like, "yes i know i used to support it, but..."

shows you that the man can change his views given updates on the facts.

no obama supporters, this isn't the same as suddenly rejecting your preacher after a huge scandal breaks out. mccain did this on his own terms like a real man.

or maybe he saw that his maverick views didn't get him nominated in 2000, so he decided to play the republican game this time.

[Edited on May 27, 2008 at 5:02 PM. Reason : not so much in regards to this specific issue though]

He's not a true conservative while he talks up being a "consistent conservative". He has big government solutions to global warming and has been dragged into the pit of economic populism. He needs to denounce this absolutism on global warming and move to talk up more laizze-faire solutions, or he might see the social conservatives and libertarians move away from him.

I don't know, what do you guys think should be done about him? Where will the conservative voice in the White House come from? Some have thrown around the idea of a VP slot for Haley Barbour, Mark Sanford, Bobby Jindal, or even Mitt Romney, who has moved to develop some true conservative credentials. Personally, I'd rather not soil myself with such rubbish. I'm seriously considering voting for Bob Barr.

Wait, he held a position back in the 90's that he has changed his veiw on 10 years later. How is that "flip-flopping?" I think the world has changed a bit since then. Not to mention the fact that people are entitle to change their minds about things over time.
