I have a bmw 530i, 01, and I just drove it home for lunch and noticed the clutch kind of chattering when i use it. It grinds when i go all the way down on it, kind of a resisitance feeling, but if i use it half way to change gears its fine. Is this a sign that my clutch is wearing out? also, how long until it is ineffective and how much does it cost to replace?

i had this happen on an aftermarket clutch setup. lots of people had the same symptons. i just put a litle stopper under the clutch so it doesnt engage all the way.

but honda clutches are known for like a 1 inch travel to engage/disengage clutch.

many bmws should use those adjustable clutch stops. My dad has one on his e36 (the home depot version is fairly easy to do) and it made things easier.

Doesn't sound necessarily like the clutch is in need of replacement. To test the clutch........drive to 20-25mph, place the transmission into 4th gear, and got WOT on the accelerator......hold it gas down until you start to pickup speed. It'll be alot easier to feel the clutch slip that way.

Sound like release bearing chatter is your noise.......either way, gotta drop the trans to replace that. Would take 5 minutes to pull the clutch disk out and examine it for wear, with the trans out. And I can help you out with all of this if you want someone to do it for you.

^well I dont live in raleigh and I assume you do so that might not work. Either rate, I'm trying to sell it in the next week or 2 b/c I'm moving and won't need the car. Guess this just drags the value down even more
