The thin film resistor displays are allegedly better.

I just got my new laptop and this display is miserable. I mean awful. When I drag a window, I can't read what's in it while it's moving due to the motion blur.

It's also really blue, but I understand certain display types use different default phosphors that are easily customized.

On my old laptop, which had a 1600 x 1200 native rez, the quality was flawless and smooth. That was an IBM r50p.

Did they put the wrong display on or something? This sucks. It's a Lenovo T61p.

I mean, if nothing is moving, then everything is razor sharp and fine (as long as I turn off that godawful ClearType).

DVD playback is abysmal using both WinDVD and PowerDVD. The quality is probably the worst I've ever seen on any display, regardless of size, resolution, or age. But I suppose that could be the software or the drive.

3D gaming seems ok. Gonna install Morrowind after work and check it out.

On a side note, Vista is quite possibly the worst piece of coding ever done. And this is coming from a mac-hating Microsoft fanboy.

you need to make sure you have the correct drivers installed, and you have the OS displaying at the native resolution.

The 'top arrived at my door, I took it out of the box. It did some self-configuring, and then was ready for use. I highly doubt it doesn't come preloaded with the right driver. Actually, I know it.

It's a lot clearer with ClearType off. I thought ClearType was to smooth out text when you're putting out a rez that is not the panel's native rez. That's not the case here. It's native 1680 x 1050, and that's what I'm running, so it looks flawless with ClearType off.

I guess I didn't explain clearly enough. That wiki says

I am experiencing no aliasing whatsoever, because I'm running at the display's native rez of 1680 x 1050, which must be why ClearType looks bad when turned on.

Uh, YES you are. You might want to read about what aliasing is. What resolution you are running at has nothing to do with it. Everyone SHOULD run at native resolution on an LCD display.

Also, it's more than just On/Off. In Vista there is a tuning wizard to get the best settings for your monitor. Below is an XP comparison (the large font issue has apparently been resolved with Vista)

I see what you're saying. It's particularly apparent looking at those large lower case As. Guess I just prefer that.
