Friend of mine got to watch the shuttle launch a few years ago while he was on a plane in the area -- got some pictures of it. Totally random thing, they didn't know it was happening.
Captain said "...and now if you look out the left side of the plane you can see the shuttle launching..."

I got to watch a launch in person about a year ago. Definitely one of those things you should do during your lifetime. Even just being relatively close to KSC, you can see the launch. Bring a portable radio and maybe some binoculars.

At night, if the shuttle is headed in the right direction, you can see it launch from North Carolina. Dull glow, plus you can see it go across the sky.

Did anyone see something streak by prior to the roll of the shuttle to the 'shuttle up' position and the release of the external fuel tank?

I was watching the live feed with my son and we both thought we some something streak past from upper right to lower left.

Photo from the Delta flight above is great: the closest thing I've experienced to that was seeing a flight of F-15s go past well below a commercial flight - I just happened to be looking out the window at the time.
