They have some good choices on that service.
Ghostbusters 1&2 The Fifth Element Blade Runner Jeff Galifankis: Live Two Jeff Dunham specials Jesus Camp Supersize Me The King of Kong A Clockwork Orange A Streetcar Named Desire Philadelphia Boondock Saints Jerry Maguire Star Trek VI Star Trek: Generations Ghost in the Shell Penn & Teller: Bullshit Weeds Seasons 1&2 The Office (British) The Office (America) Season 1 Dexter Season 1 Quantum Leap Law & Order: CI and SVU
That's just some of the better/well-known stuff I saw. There are a lot of classic movies for watching too. It might not be great for big-budget movies with surround sound, but it's great for quieter films and documentaries IMO.

I think there's a thread in chit chat about this. But selection is 99% shit, you have to wade through a lot of dreck to find the titles you posted, and most of those suck, too. Video quality is pretty horrible also.
A more interesting topic would be the home player they've released. It's a neat idea, but still crap selection.
Also,

dammit, just missed the 30 minute cutoff
Video quality was pretty damn good for me. Netflix said it was DVD quality and as far as I can tell that's what I got. I think most of movies and shows I listed are worth killing a little time with. 6/2/2008 10:21:56 PM |

and they somehow don't even support OS X/Quicktime yet. despite having media players that can play anything, netflix refuses to let me try with their detection code 6/2/2008 10:49:32 PM |

not true, just use the search feature and you can choose to add the title to your queue or watch it instantly6/3/2008 12:30:44 AM |

The Orphanage, Pan's Labyrinth, ESOTSM, Weeds, The King of Kong, Trade. Well, looks like you had a few of those in the list too, but there are some more from the front page.
A couple months ago it used to be an even worse selection. 6/3/2008 12:41:56 AM |

yeah and the higher rated movies/shows are usually on the top of the page. the only problem i have with it is having tv seasons that are incomplete. quantum leap is missing episodes in seasons i'd like to see 6/3/2008 1:01:05 AM |

forgot about that little disclaimer they have... meeeeh... idk. i know apple's anal about a lot of things, but i found that one hard to go along with
wish i could use it in os x though... oh well i guess.. they need more good movies though6/3/2008 2:23:56 AM |

That's probably your connection. I'm streaming onto a 4 year old POS desktop hooked up to my TV and the quality is at least as good as what you'd see from an unusually effective upconverting dvd player. I rarely have to wait more than 20 seconds for a show to start and I've probably watched more on their instant watch that I have on DVD's this past month.
The nice thing is that your "instant queue" is built from your regular queue anyways so if you only put things you want to watch in your queue then you'll only have stuff you want to watch in your instant queue. Things I've watched and love and probably wouldn't have thought to raise to the top of my normal queue:
Dexter Weeds Penn and Teller's Bullshit McLibel Cocaine Cowboys The City of Lost Children Slaughter House Five Unforgiven Sleeper Cell Red Dwarf A Boy and His Dog Dead Like Me Nightwatch Jeremiah Lake of Fire Ken Burns: Mark Twain
Hell, between my roommate and I my instant watch history is 738 instances. Assume half of those are things I didn't finish in one viewing or repeats between the two of us, that's still more than the total number of DVD's I've received from netflix in 2 years of using their service. Yeah I know dvd's come with more than one episode on them, but that still shows you can get significant amounts of good stuff off the instant watch feature. The only problem is a lack of a good reccomendation system for it and the fact that you probably have never heard of a lot of the best things on it.
Still, as long as you have a very large queue, like most people, there should be some good stuff in your instant queue. If the video quality sucks, then that's either your system or your internet connection because it looks beautiful on all my machines and the machines on campus I've watched it on.6/3/2008 3:08:40 AM |

I love this shit, in 4-5 years it will all be streaming media like this. Why even bother with discs. I streamed an HD movie yesterday and it worked absolutely perfect. I couldn't believe it.
I hope Sony gets in on this with PSN just so they'll lighten up with Sony movies availability through this. Right now I know they are bitter. 11/20/2008 9:07:45 AM |

For the limits, here is the answer:
If you have an unlimited number of DVD rentals a month, then you have unlimited watch instantly.
If you have Starz Play only, which gets you no DVDs, then your $7.99/month pays for unlimited watch instantly.
If you have the cheapest plan (1 disc a month, 2 rentals max) then you get two hours a month of watch instantly. This is $4.99/month.
So as long as your paying more than $4.99/month, you have unlimited streaming. 11/24/2008 10:25:12 PM |
