What do you guys think? What are the best places to host a site? I was thinking about going with Webaxxs.com, but I thought I would get your opinions first!

i'd say mediatemple as well if you can afford them, but i've had no qualms with lunarpages for a lower budget host.

I still recommend Dreamhost for websites that are trying to get off the ground. Tons of storage and bandwidth for dirt cheap. You can always move to a more expensive host if the business begins to turn a profit, but for the money there isn't much out there that can beat them. And yes, that's a referral link...Yes, I would get paid if you used that link to sign up. Might as well throw that out there before anyone questions my motivation.

Out of curiousity, have you ever pushed anywhere near even half of that amount of bandwidth on Dreamhost?

I need a host solely for serving images (and will push about 1.5-2TB a month), but I don't want to run into a situation where actually using the bandwidth gets me the boot.

^ If you use an excessive amount of bandwidth they will flag your account and limit your bandwidth to about 10-50 kB/s.

This happened to me, and this was only at the 400GB range. They don't tell you they're doing it, and you won't find out until you interact with a CSR.

^ most already do this, but really can you honestly expect to get much more than 40-60KBps for $6/month?

Get serious!

In the end thats what you paid for, the fact that you have GB's of transfer doesnt matter, mathematically you could never use fraction of that due to the fact your already limited.

If you want 500KBps+ of transfer both ways, you need to expect to pay in the low $100/months minimum.

You're right, but it's never something I really thought about when I signed up. When I first got their service, it was lightning fast because I never went through more than 3-4 GBs/month. Download speeds were 800+KB/s to my computer through Comcast.

But over time the demand grew due to people hotlinking, and within one month I went from 3-4 GBs to about 1.5TB. That's when I got rated, and I honestly don't blame them.

They worked with me to setup the hotlink protection, saw the consumption drop back to it's pre-hotlinking days, and removed the bandwidth cap. Now it's back to being extremely fast again.

When doing a price estimate, S3 was more expensive than me just renting another webserver at a datacenter.

Yeah, S3 is good in a lot of cases, but this probably isn't one of them... it's just asking for problems. For example, some browsers just won't display images that aren't from the same domain as the page you're on -- this cuts down on the number of adverts.

^a lot of larger websites use s3 as their media delivery network

it's good practice to have images and page content on seperate servers if you expect any significant volume.

The problem is it's not even remotely cost effective.

Using their calculator, it was going to cost me $510 a month for 3,000GB of transfer out with 1GB of storage, which is outright ludicrous.

I would like to create a site for my newborn on the way.... very basic, uploading photos and updates for friends and family. I can not imagine this would have a lot of traffic, but I would be uploading a lot of photos.

1 - for something so basic, what would your suggestion be? Price is an issue (newborn).

2 - Its cheaper to register the domain name somewhere else rather than using the host for that too usually right? Any recommendations? I went to 1and1.com

3 - very generic here, best way to create the website? I went and bought a book.... starting to read it now.

Thank you all for any help you might have to offer.

You'd probably be better off just uploading pictures to flickr or creating something using Google Pages.

^ yeah, that is probably true. My wife does not really like the flickr albums... I am not familiar with googlepages... will go check it out. I would like to have her name as the URL, possibility with googlepages (not likely I know)?

you can create a free wordpress.com blog. i think they support hosting your own domain. if not you can buy a domain at godaddy and mask it to forward to your blog.

for what you want to do, and if you actually want your own web space, go with the 1&1 beginner package ($1.99/month for 3 months, then $3.99/month and it includes 1 domain registration, so about $42 for a year)

^ although that would probably be your best option...really, i can't think of why you wouldn't be able to just host your pictures anywhere and then buy a domain (they're $7/year at 1&1, which is the cheapest i've found) and have it point to the long and random address associated with your free picture hosting site

what does the referral get? i use them only for domain registrations (because they're cheaper than most others), but not for hosting (though i've set several people up with them)

so if I want to have a basic .com sight with 3-5 pages of standard info, which would be best. Maybe one that offers simple design and building tools as well.

I can use your referral link if 1-1 is best for a cheap site and domain name

In my opinion, the best option for a simple landing page is to use Wordpress, buy a domain name and the CSS upgrade, and dig through the codex. Super cheap and super easy.

You just want a simple landing page, right? Just a small handful of static, infrequently updated pages?

My suggestion is that you get an account at Wordpress (http://www.wordpress.com). Wordpress is a Content Management System (CMS), used mainly for blogging, but also useful in small enterprise sites.

If you want your URL to be http://www.mildewssite.com and not http://mildewssite.wordpress.com, buy a domain through GoDaddy. I think you can do it through WP, but it's probably cheaper through GoDaddy.

With a basic Wordpress account you're given an option of 20-30 templates but they all mainly suck and none would likely be what you're looking for. Luckily you can buy a CSS upgrade that will let you modify your site's CSS. (CSS [Cascading Style Sheets] is what formats the text and information of a website) There are also thousands and thousands and thousands of WP templates available for free or for a cost that you could buy and modify to your liking if you don't want to start from scratch.

You can find out a lot more about WP, templates, and tags by using the WP Codex. It's indispensable if you're just getting started.

All in all, it's a much cheaper and much simpler route for what you need than buying hosting. If need be, you can pay for additional hosting through WP.

pretty much any of the hosts available will do that for you. for what you're wanting, just pick one that's cheapest

i still think 1and1 would be great for you (i dont get hardly anything out of the referral link so dont think im saying it bc of that). its a few bucks a YEAR for your domain/hosting which includes email and the website like you're talking about
