Rar's rule. I always get better compression out of them. Plus you can split up huge files into a bunch of smaller ones if you need to send stuff by email.

Get 7-zip and go away.

Open source, faster than the others, more formats, better compression.

the open source part is the only bit that's true when compared to winrar

<3 rar
i use it for as much as I can. if you've got a thumb drive that isn't password protected just keep everything in a storage file with a copy of the installation application next to that file in case you end up somewhere that doesn't have it.

zip can password protect too but it doesn't sound as neat

7zip has, by far, the best compression rate.

yeah, 7-zip is 10x better than either rar or zip, and it's free

"by far" and "10X better" here = about ten percent

kitty one flings his claws up in a fit of rage

i wasn't just referring to the actual capabilities, but the program as a whole

if you ever use the "best" processor intensive rar algorithm, which basically just makes the hashes REALLY big and the dictionary really big, you get an extremely small file, especially if it has a lot a text.

E:\Documents and Settings\smoothcrim\Desktop>dir mgs*.*
Volume in drive E has no label.
Volume Serial Number is 3413-BCC7

Directory of E:\Documents and Settings\smoothcrim\Desktop

2008-06-08 10:38 AM 84,023 mgs3.7z
2008-06-08 10:36 AM 70,426 mgs3.rar
2008-06-08 02:29 AM 331,750 mgs3.txt
3 File(s) 486,199 bytes
0 Dir(s) 1,551,077,376 bytes free

Using 7-zip 4.58 beta (newest version)
Using winrar version 3.51 (2005) because I have a legit license for it, not a demo.
winrar on "best" 7zip on ultra with biggest dictionary, 2 threads, and biggest wordsize

clearly depends on the composition of the files you're compressing, byte code vs plain text, etc.

I know everyone gets their own opinion.

But you're wrong.

last time i had to send my boss some data from work (several hundred tortoise burrow locations for GIS), i used winrar instead of winzip. he got all confused and had to get the tech guys at the columbia office to figure it out, and they recommended to him that i only zip the files rather than rar them.

huh?

rar -> self extracting archive (sfx).
just tell him to double click it. though if your boss is that inept, you dont wanna get him in the habit of double clicking exe email attachments.

I'll reiterate that 7-zip is the best program on the face of the earth, for the price

I'll reiterate that everyone gets an opinion, but anyone that thinks that program isn't a piece of shit is a moron.

The best thing that ever happened to winrar is they started supporting 7zip files. I could finally uninstall the shitpile of software that was 7zip.
