was their access actually usable?

It seems like anyone who is aware of usenet already has a subscription to an unlimited provider such as UNS or giganews.

What are some good free programs for usenet? I know ForteAgent used to be free, and Outlook Express does news. I hate OE, and Thunderbird doesn't handle multipart messages well. Maybe a Thunderbird Extension? Of course, it's possible I've got the whole idea completely wrong.

Very. 45+ day retention in binary groups, 500-600k/s download speeds all the time...friggin' loved having it the last year or so.

From usenet i get over 105+ day retention and 1.2Mbytes/sec constant download. Giganews has a 200+ retention but it's like twice the cost and i can't justify it just for the retention.

yes, those are better, but they cost extra. The selling point of RR's service is that it was included in your subscription.

It doesn't matter now anyway, since I've just moved and switched to Comcast. They use Giganews as a backend but have a goddamn 2GB monthly cap, so I'm probably going to sign up for a pay service in the next few months.

2GB? Are you kidding me? That's like 1 quarter of a movie.

Shockingly, they probably don't care than it's only about a quarter of a movie you're illegally downloading from the newsgroups.

since you can't legally download it, that would only leave one other option

Sure you can. There's plenty of public domain/free-distribution movies. Maybe i was refering to that ONE time i downloaded a movie legally!

Not sure of the credibility of this since I can't test it at the moment, however:

Time Warner didn't kill newgroups now we get FREE Newshosting.com 2MB/s 4 Connections 100 Day Retention

that's a lie, I downloaded a file that had a 89d header last night at 750KB/s.

edit: someone else try it out, I had a friend last night who was actually hitting those caps.

4 connections will get you however fast you want on RR. I've gotten 1.2 MBytes/seconds from RR's news server before. If there's actually 100 day retention than i should just cancel usenetserver and use this. Although there's no ssh.

might want to wait and see--I don't think they've actually set up the free service yet. The Slickdeals post said the connections are working for everyone right now, so I think you're just getting the full account privileges.

Once they limit it to RR addresses, that's when you might see the retention drop. Just guessing, though.

that slickdeals posting looks like it is for a specific road runner area or aquisition...

the official road runner notice:
http://help.rr.com/HMSFaqs/e_newsgroups_termination.aspx

I cannot access Road Runner Newsgroups or download articles?
As of June 23, 2008, Road Runner will no longer offer Newsgroups, however users can subscribe on their own to third party News providers.
