How much would a lightly used iPhone with the latest firm ware (1.1.4?) be worth? Its activated, unlocked and jailbroken.

^^ Not true. Right now, they might not be worth much, but come July 11, they will probably be worth a shit ton more since the 3G units have to be activated in store.
Especially when the other GSM carriers in the US dont have 3G coverage (so a jailbroken 3G unit wouldnt have much advantage for someone over a 1st gen on Tmobile or Suncom or whatever)

^ you're a fool if you think there won't be a way to hack the 3Gs for everyone else.
In any case... http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2008/06/12/memo-hints-at-itunes-activation-with-3g-iphone "Memo hints at iTunes activation with 3G iPhone" 6/14/2008 11:50:05 PM |

^^^I'm not saying there wont be a way, but it's not going to be like it was with the 1G.
How many people do you know who would rather buy a jailbroken 3G unit at ~$500-600 instead of just paying an ETF ($150) and buying on on contract from AT&T at $199?
Not to mention that any jailbroken 3G unit would not get 3G speeds unless on the AT&T network to begin with. It would be pointless and stupid.
And there's no way that AT&T is going to subsidize a phone and let people take it home to activate - they would be literally throwing money away. I don't give a shit what Ars Technica "hints" at - it's all just fucking wishful thinking and inability to read. Connecting to iTunes at home would just unbrick in the case of it not working properly at the store for whatever reason. You still have to do all of the contract shit in-store, and all of that stuff will get put into AT&T's DB to be available for you to unbrick at home should the need arise. That doesn't mean you can walk into the At&t store and go "Hey i need to buy the new 3G iphone" and walk right out with it like was done before. If you believe that, then YOU'RE the fool, not me. 6/15/2008 9:54:21 AM |

I thought the 3G phone is backwards compatible and can operate with no problems on Edge type networks. 6/16/2008 11:26:21 AM |

Yeah of course. My question is what's the deal with the edge versus 3g talk time. If you get 5 hours of talk time on 3g and 10 hours of talk time on edge then why would you use 3g? Is the quality that much better? 6/16/2008 11:35:37 AM |
pureetofu All American 2748 Posts user info edit post |
Last I checked the call quality would be identical since the sampling on the network and all that doesn't change. I think AT&T keeps everybody locked at 9.6kbps for all calls, but I could be mistaken.... where's that AT&T rep now?!? 6/16/2008 12:28:55 PM |

So then they should have an option to restrict calling to edge right? I guess it would have to switch from 3g to edge but it would double battery life. 6/16/2008 1:15:34 PM |

I'm wondering about this myself... I could sell mine (has a small 1" crack in the top corner) and still probably get one for little to no cost... especially after just checking some ebay listings (http://cgi.ebay.com/iPhone-8GB-Cracked-screen-still-works-UNLOCKED-Any-SIM_W0QQitemZ330243380452QQihZ014QQcategoryZ3312QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)
I don't mind the new data plan rate since 3g is faster
BUT
are the text message plans going to be $5 more across the board? That's kinda crappy if so 6/16/2008 9:11:00 PM |

What does it mean if an iphone is jailbroken? It can be used on any network? I would love an iphone on sprint with my cheap unlimited data 6/17/2008 6:43:24 PM |

^Unlocked means that it can be used on any network (at least any network that uses sim cards). Jailbroken means that it can have third party apps installed on it. 6/18/2008 2:30:35 PM |
