mating is not necessary for an egg to be laid, if that's what you're getting at.

Hens begin laying at 18 – 20 weeks of age and a healthy chicken will lay about one egg a day. A hen does not need a rooster to lay eggs and eggs are produced in response to day light patterns. The eggs we buy in the store are not fertilized (they don’t hatch). The size of the egg is dependant on the age of the hen. Older birds lay larger eggs. 6/16/2008 9:24:43 PM |

As always, the answer comes from Seinfeld:
FRANK: What is this thing anyway?
MRS. ROSS: It's Cornish gamehen.
FRANK: What is that, like a little chicken?
GEORGE: It's, uh, it's not a little chicken. [laughing] Little chicken. It's a gamebird.
FRANK: Gamebird?
GEORGE: Yeah.
FRANK: What do you mean? Like, you - you hunt it?
MR. ROSS: Yes.
FRANK: How hard could it be to kill this thing?
. . .
FRANK: Let me understand, you got the hen, the chicken and the rooster. The rooster goes with the chicken. So, who's having sex with the hen?
GEORGE: Why don't we talk about it another time?
FRANK: But you see my point here? You only hear of a hen, a rooster and a chicken. Something's missing!
MRS. ROSS: Something's missing, all right. . .
MR. ROSS: They're all chickens. The rooster has sex with all of them.
FRANK: That's perverse! 6/16/2008 9:53:51 PM |

My mother had a few hens and they're the reason why I can't eat an actual egg anymore. Egg-beaters, fine... but I can't crack an egg an eat it. I know it's all mental, but basically I came to the conclusion that the eggs we eat are about the equivalent of a woman's period (minus the blood). It's an un-fertilized egg that gets expelled from the body.
Plus the act of going to get an egg from the nest/coop and it was still warm and kind of sticky... 6/16/2008 10:36:00 PM |

^dude, i used to wash the chicken shit off of eggs that we'd eat. if they didn't meet the weight requirement (we had laying houses, the eggs were fertilized), they became "table eggs", as in we ate them. that's^ some weak shit. 6/16/2008 10:41:09 PM |
