i always find it funny that people feel a single spider and his web will have a significant effect on the number of mosquitoes/flies/etc. they have to deal with.

I truly LOATHE people who kill insects/bugs that don't harm us. Like people who kill spiders, moths, praying mantises, beetles, ants, etc.

The only insects I kill are mosquitoes, cockroaches, and flies, and the reason is obvious. But even then, I don't kill one as soon as I see one... if they leave me alone, I don't bother killing them. But bugs other than those, I will never kill them.
