i am curious how this works and what you were doing at the time. i have never been patted down to date, never really had a reason to actually, and i would feel demoralized if i did. 6/18/2008 11:13:58 AM |

When I was arrested in 9th grade.
They didn't actually find anything, and I wasn't carrying anything. But still... patted down.

Last time I flew out of Laguardia Airport I forgot that I was wearing my knee brace. So when I was going through security the metal detector kept going off. I told them I had a brace on so they let me through and led me to the side. I was told to sit down, and was patted down from a seated position. Then I was patted down twice while standing up, all over. Then they went over me with a metal detector wand. They they said they had to see the leg brace. I said I have to pull my pants down to show you. So I was taken to a private area and two employees watched me pull down my pants to show the leg brace.
The airport wasn't that busy, I had plenty of time, and it was my own fault so I wasn't pissed or anything. They were very thorough, however they didn't notice the 8 oz bottle of sunblock I accidentally had in my carryon bag, HAHA!

i bet handcuffs are scary, especially if it a prank cop trying to be hard, he might be so ignorant and claim you are resisting and whip you with his night stick. 6/18/2008 11:21:42 AM |

As the inspiration for this thread, I'm honored
Its happened a lot less frequently since I started working and spend much less time in places where this might occur
It doesn't happen all that often in Charlotte... only about 6-7 times in my several years living here
Theres not really a central place to congregate that would facilitate random checks
5 of those times I've been patted down while hanging around the AMC movie theater on South Boulevard...no particular reason, other than we were probably being loud and scaring the shit out of the middle age couples
In New Jersey, where i grew up and return frequently to visit, it happens nearly every time I go back
The act itself isn't very demoralizing if several people are involved...its only really bad when its just you in front of a bunch of people you don't know...even worse if you're with a girl
Basically, just put your hands on a wall or some kind of surface and the officer runs his hands down your side, on your front pockets, and sometimes down your back
Its worse in the winter when you have a bunch of clothes on...they make you take your jacket off and stand their in the cold while they check every pocket, and most of my jackets have like 10
The checks IMO are mainly for guns and secondary for drugs... I don't carry the former, and I'm usually very smart with the latter and only once have been caught with weed, one blunt at that, and I spent one night in jail
Other times my friends have been busted with drugs, and a few times with a gun, which sends the cops into quite a furor
All in all, a humbling experience, but not something I dread anymore since I've gotten used to it
But at 23.5 years old, I'm hopeful that it will happen less and less often in the future
[Edited on June 18, 2008 at 11:30 AM. Reason : also its not really a racial thing imo...its more of a persona thing; if you look shady; they search] 6/18/2008 11:28:46 AM |

One time going grocery shopping in Cary at 3AM with expired plates. This check was definitely for drugs and nothing but drugs.
I think the cop was pretty suprised not to find any on a skinny white guy in a beat-up red hyundai tiburon with expired plates at 3 in the morning. 6/18/2008 11:38:28 AM |

I got pulled in New Bern a while back. I was doing 45 in a 35 less than a half mile before it turned into a 45. The cop said that I was speeding but he couldn't tell me how fast I was going and never wrote me a ticket. He just told me that it was on the radar gun in his cruiser.
He approached the car and asked me step out. I asked why and he said that car smelled of marijuana. I had driven the car off of the lot brand new 2 weeks prior and there had never been drugs in it, obviously the cop just didn't know the difference between pot and new car smell (even though he told me repeatedly that he used to be a narcotics officer).
He patted me down and told me that he had found a pipe in my pocket. I laughed and told him that it wouldn't be admissable in court because he was only allowed to search for weapons. He asked me to show him the pipe so I did - it was actually a bottle opener on my key chain shaped like little beer bottle.
He asked if he could search the car and I said sure. Obviously he didn't find anything. The stop ended when another older cop showed up and basically laughed at the one who stopped me. The original one had me sit in his car with him and then got in my face and told me that he knew that he had smelled pot. I asked him why he wasn't a narcotics officer anymore. He got pissed at me, then I looked around the car and asked him "Where's that radar gun that you were talking about?"
He got flustered and told me that I was free to go. 6/18/2008 1:10:44 PM |

Once when I was caught speeding...
The other time was in a premier at a movie theater and they didn't want any camera phones or any other recording devices... They failed because I saw one person with a camera phone at the end of the movie and another kid came out with his phone during the pat down trying to get some food from the concessions. haha, the kid got pulled to the side and questioned, even though the movie didn't start.

I got pulled over because the barney thought my car, a silver crown victoria with a CB antenna, "resembled a law enforcement vehicle". He patted me down for weapons, thinking I was a police impersonator. He asked to search the car but I said no. Eventually he sent me on my way. I later learned that there had been recent reports of a blue-light bandit in the area. This was at 8:30 in the morning; if it had been late at night God only knows what would have happened.
What happens at the airport when you're selected for additional screening? Do they strip-search you and question you or something? 6/18/2008 2:35:15 PM |

I got patted down the first weekend after getting my driver's license. I got pulled over in my Cutlass and the first words out of the cops mouth (after he put his gun back in the holster) were "What are you white boys doing in a black neighborhood." Yeah, Rocky Mount was awesome.
Then once or twice when I got pulled over the cops patted me down before bringing me to their car and making me blow into the breathalyser. This was understandable and within reason though, so I don't fault them for doing it. Of course I blew 0.00 and was let go.
A while back I finished my flask at a restaurant and we walked to a club. After three shots of 100+ proof liquor at the house, a few drinks with dinner, and another five shots or so out of the flask I didn't think to drop it off at the car before we went to the club. When we walked through the metal detector my flask set it off. Fortunately the off duty cop who was working the door just waved his wand over my crotch and jacket before letting me through. He never even waved it over my back pocket where the flask was.
