I'm pretty sure I made a thread on it once

an extant one is the one about downloading RD's classical mp3s - they're still there, but they'll probably be taken down soon (the account is tartsquid's), so grab some stuff there if you're into piano while you have a chance:

message_topic.aspx?topic=450004

what is everyone's favorite kind? favorite composers? favorite pieces?

my favorite composer is the one and only Frederic Chopin

mostly I'm an early 20th century classical music lover

my favorite piece is probably Sergei Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 1 in D Major

if it's ok by evan and space is not an issue, I may host a few things on [link]http://www.euphalo.com/ - but I don't want the server to implode

I'm also really big on solo piano music and I have a huge collection

get at me if you don't know much about classical and want some introductions to good stuff, or if you are looking for something in particular by a popular composer (Bach, Beethoven, Mozart and the like) because I probably have it

definitely can't go wrong with Vivaldi

Sibelius, however, I have never been able to get into

I think I might have some piano music of his, and I've tried listening to some of his symphonic music

but I tend to stay away from Romantics except for Chopin and the occasional Liszt and Schubert

I love Bach because I love the idea of "tonicizing" and he did some amazing stuff with that. Its something I am working very hard on but there are so many ways to approach it that I am having a hard time not getting turned around while working on it.

oh and I like Vivaldi too, but at the same time he was kind of a "pop" classical composer in that a lot of things he wrote were kind of cheesy, "expected" key progressions (ie he humped the heck out of some circle of fifths). Not to say there is anything wrong with that, in fact it makes it almost more approachable and easy on the ears at times. But he wasnt as interesting as some other people.

I like Stravinsky, Ravel, and Debussy a lot. Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff are a couple of other favorites.

Stravinsky's "The Rite of Sping" was always a personal favorite of mine. I found a perfect vinyl copy at a thrift store a while back for 25 cents.

i've been reading The Rest is Noise by Alex Ross off and on for the last couple months. it's a really interesting book about 20th century classical composers and some of the role of their lives and history on their music.

that aside, i'm a big fan of shostakovich, steve reich, beethoven, rachmaninoff and debussy
