anyone ever hire professional movers? if so, how much did it cost? and was it worth the cost as opposed to doing it yourself/with friends?

it's expensive, and they aren't exactly gentle with your shit. i would never do it personally, but if you are lazy then I guess it's worth it

it can be very expensive or not too bad depending on what you have and how far you are moving it.
most companies charge just to come down (like 90-100 bucks) then can charge anywhere between 75-100 an hour.

i hired some people from "A Christian Touch Moving Services" (i know, haha) through Uhaul. i got the truck, drove it back to my place, they met me at the designated time, and moved all my crap into the truck, then followed me to my new apartment (about 30min drive) and unloaded it all up to my third floor apartment. i helped them load and unload boxes and things, but that was because i wanted to help move things along.

total cost with the truck and the movers was roughly $230 or so. i would say it was worth it. i moved on a work day so none of my friends could have come out to help anyway.

oh, and i highly recommend that moving service if you're going through uhaul, they were super accomidating, real friendly, and they worked real hard and real fast without complaining.

oh yeah, and i got a quote to move all of my furniture by a company with a truck of their own that would come out and do everything for me, their quote was $550. i only have a one bedroom apartment worth of furniture.

I had that experience with the first time I used movers, but the most recent time with Two Guys and a Truck they were really careful. To the point that I was thinking, "Do they really need to wrap that couch with more cling wrap? I think it's good ..." Obviously if you have good china or something I wouldn't let them move that.

most moving companies are insured, so if they break your stuff, it's covered. if you get a uhaul and your friends break your stuff... well, you're just screwed.

Yeah, some friends scratched the crap out of the top of my dresser when I moved. And I didn't even want to say anything because that would have made me an uberbitch.

since they're insured, that'd be a good thing I suppose, even though I probably would be paying a decent amount of dollar bucks.

i would depend on what's more important to you.. i've moved with friends before and it usually takes all day because we'll dick around and take forever. when i had the moving service come help move me, we had everything loaded, moved, and unloaded in under 3 hours. that was nice.

i don't know if the people i had were insured or not, but it wasn't very important to me because my stuff isn't that nice. most of it i still had from college. i'm pretty sure if you just wrap the tv up, and make sure it's surrounded by moving blankets and in a secure spot, then you shouldn't have anything to worry about. unless of course they drop it or something..

I moved over christmas break and most of my friends had peaced out, and I had a tiny stairwell to get everything up so I hired some movers. most of them they have a minimum time block, and by the time the movers came, i only had the major furniture left in the apartment, so I paid for plenty of time they didn't actually work. so I would recommend that if you do hire the movers, have all your stuff boxed up and let them carry it while they're being paid instead of slaving over a bunch of boxes.

I just had a professional moving company move me from DC to Knoxville, TN. After trying to find a moving company using some of the "moving 123" websites that puts you in contact with local companies, and after learning that most of these companies were as crooked as the predatory towing establishments, I decided to go with a national company.

I went with United Van Lines, who eventually "sold" the move to Mayflower (who is now owned by United). They gave me a flat rate which included them coming in and packing up a good amount of my goods, providing boxes and moving supplies (tape, shrink wrap, blankets, etc). The movers that showed up were very professional and everything arrived to Knoxville in one piece. The only thing that was damaged was a small scratch on one of my nightstands.

Along with the flat rate I decided to purchase full value replacement insurance, which added only $200 to the cost of the move. Most moving companies insure your goods for approximately 60 cents per pound, and the next insurance up from there will replace up to the depreciated value. The full replacement value was the most expensive but worth it in my opinion.

The total move cost me $2,200 door to door (including insurance, but excluding tips). Call me lazy, but it was awesome having people take care of everything for me.

i hired a moving company from raleigh to new bern.

i had a full living room set (couch, love seat, chair with ottoman) coffee table, dinning room set w/ 6 chairs, 36" TV, bed, desk, dresser, and then a ton of boxes.

was around $1000, which was mostly for the drive

yeah I'm kinda leaning towards the moving company option, with the extra liability insurance for additional peace of mind. especially since they do it all in a relatively short period of time.

I finally sucked it up and hired movers, 2 guys and a truck after I bought a house. I figured if I was shelling out all that cash for a place I could afford to pay damn movers. 2 guys showed up with a Mexican, finished the job 2 hours earlier than they estimated on the phone and undercharged me for 2 hours on top of that. Everything looked good after the move.
