pearl jam sucks anyways

every album kanye has put out has been more relevant, musically progressive, and interesting than anything PJ has done in the last 10 years.

he does sound like a bitch though

i just have a hard time understanding how a form of music that is 1) based almost completely on synthesized sounds and 2) although can be extremely catchy and fun with rhythm and beats is very not musical in any normal definition of the word can be more musically progressive than a half decent normal band. I mean pearl jam was nothing special but still.

And I am not trying to bash hip-hop. I like a handful of it, admittedly I am not as big of a fan as any of you but if my ipod isnt on Im always on a hip hop station instead of the absolutely TERRIBLE modern rock stations. so by no means do I bash it and say hip-hop sucks or something because I understand that it definitely has its place in the world of entertainment.

but youd talk yourself in circles trying to explain how someone like kanye is "musically" progressive in my opinion.

how? Besides the good musicians that I often accompany hip hop/r&B artists live (mainly drummers and bass players), there really is hardly anything "musical" to me about hip hop. Like I said, that doesnt mean I dont enjoy some, but in a classical sense there is nothing groundbreaking or musically interesting about hip hop. it has beats and melodies. hardly EVER interesting time signatures and even less frequent anything remotely creative even on an elementary level done with keys etc.

im not dissing it. weezer's blue album wasnt musically progressive and really isnt that musical and is super fun.

^^ what he said

Why do you have to be a traditionally structured band to be musically progressive?

^ the blue album plays to the obvious and it works. 99% of the time the next note or chord you hear is the one your ear expects. but thats why it works. theres nothing interesting done but it just has such GREAT, yet simple harmonies. Notice i didnt say anywhere that you HAVE to be musical or musically progressive to write ENJOYABLE music.

^^ you dont have to be a traditionally structured band at all. it can be one sax player or simply a drummer and bass player or just a violin player or an entire symphony orchestra. I didnt suggest you had to be a traditionally structured band at all.

^^youre making a HUGE jump from saying something isnt pushing classical musical boundaries and making it sound like I said making a successful hip hop song doesnt take some sort of skill or talent (especially on the production side).

^while its not my thing, ive heard a lot of techno/electronica/etc. that actually does some very interesting things musically. there is lots that does not but there is lots that does.

^ What do you define as "classical musical boundaries"?

I would argue that most music, regardless of genre, that's mainstream doesn't push any musical boundaries. I don't see why people like to pick on hip hop. Yeah, a lot of it sucks, but so does music from any genre.

oh i completely agree, trust me. Im not picking on hip hop. Hip Hop isnt really ABOUT pushing musical boundaries and thats fine. My initial comment was simply regarding the fact that I dont consider Kanye musically progressive.

I have absolutely no problem listening to hip hop haha. I mean I was rockin Lil' Wyte at work today

I don't listen to hip hop so I am far from an expert but I think there are still examples of mainstream songs that are interesting musically. The best example that I have heard is Sensual Seduction http://youtube.com/watch?v=pKz-RXSeIYA. It is a lot better than the prominent thudding baseline + cheesy high pitched timberland type synth that most songs seem to have on the radio.

i know that song and its definitely got a much more interesting beat than a lot of mainstream hip hop for sure.

and im not really here to start or at least continue a pissing match haha. im not trying to attack hip hop. it IS music, i wasnt debating that either dont worry.

Kanye is unique in hip hop in that he often incorporates more melodic elements rather than relying mostly on syncopated rhythms. Music in general is going this direction though, of mixing traditionally separate styles together.

"Big Brother" even has an electric guitar as a main component of the melody. If there were no vocals the drums are the main thing that give it away as a hip-hop song.

well I mean you have a point but rap almost relies on the mainstream for the genre to exist with club music to dance to and a beat to excite you, if you're referring to mainstream music thats on g105 then you are right but if you have a larger boundaries then you'd be surprised, at least other music has some respect for the roots and theory of actual music

lol. im pretty sure everyone is aware of that, i dont exactly hide it or anything... and we werent talking about vocals, heck a lot of hip-hop vocals arent conventional singing either (and im NOT saying that is bad) so im not sure what you were trying to prove.

I've been sick of Pearl Jam since their "Ten" album

but, goddamn if Kanye doesn't sound like a whiny bitch. All his self-centered bitching and moaning has really gotten to the point where I've lost about all respect for him, personally. Cause all I've got to go on is the shit he says in the media.
