[quote]But if Obama wins, he may have paved the path to a powerful Democratic majority. Obama has also sent out fundraising e-mails in the last week on behalf of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

A “new president alone isn't enough,” Obama wrote in a message sent to the DSCC’s e-mail list. “I've served long enough in the U.S. Senate to know that Washington must change, and I also know that big changes don't happen without big Senate majorities — and right now, Democrats occupy only 49 seats.”

“This November, we have a chance to create a Democratic Senate majority like we haven't seen in decades — but it won't happen on its own,” he wrote.[\quote]

the "change" hes been refering to is complete democratic control.....

BTW Obama, how long have you been in the Senate exactly? The "I've served long enough in the U.S. Senate" line really shouldnt ever apply to you!

4 years is a pretty decent amount of time and complete Democratic control sounds pretty good to me after the last 8 years

I guess this is to be expected from you, but Obama is not saying that the change he is talking about is democratic control, he's saying he can't implement his change with the republicans blocking every move, which is true.

It's not that hard to understand, really. But either you're an idiot, or for some reason you're choosing not to understand.

And on top of that, what president wouldn't want congress to be backing them? You really think McCain is sitting around thinking "man, I hope congress remains controlled by democrats so that when I win, they try and block all that i do."

What a dumb thread.

LOL, that one year before running for president. This guy is a loon. The sad thing is whenever he said that I bet not one eyebrow was raised in the room. So sad.

I thought he was good at reaching across the aisle and all that. has he given up before even getting elected?

Expected response: "Well duh! Like with public finance, Obama didn't need to try to know that Repugnicans would just try to run him over! The only unity that matters is party unity!!"

I say that's the expected response, because I'm pretty sure that's what I remember Republicans saying in 2000. Who would have known the tables would turn so quickly?

"I've served long enough in the U.S. Senate"

That phrase doesn't imply he's spent a long time in the senate. A "long enough" time does not mean a long time.

And I think 5 minutes is "long enough" to come to the conclusion he's reached in that speech.

yes, and "5 mins" in the US senate is enough time to qualify for president it seems as well.

heres the point for those who missed it......

Obama has been preaching that he is above the US political system. He wants complete change.

By making comments like these, he is doing just the opposite. He is showing that hes like every other democrat/republican. He counts D's and R's just like other politicians. With comments like these, do you really expect him to work across lines party? I dont.

I wouldn't trust the republicans to let him attempt to make any positive changes that would make a positive influence on the way things work on Washington - but obviously many of you won't agree. So why don't you just shut the fuck up and vote. I'm tired of all the bitching on this fucking site.

You aren't reeling me back into the type of stupid bullshit that is spread all over The Soap Box. You need to get a fucking life. Yeah, when it was freezing outside, i'd sit around and argue while at work. Right now though, there are half naken women walking around outside, and you want me to sit here and argue with you?

great answer or not an answer at all. And in the time you took to give me the update of your life and the weather you could have answered the question... if you HAD an answer to the question.

Oh the "fuck off dude" was a nice touch. Maybe they will train that out of you in law school. Doubtful, but worth a shot.

Good day

^^ They're, there, and their were covered in grade school if I recall correctly.

I don't think the Democrats will be able to deliver, even with a solid majority, anything like what the Obamanastics* actually expect him as an individual or the party as a whole to deliver. Their greatest ally is GWB and their greatest enemy is, truthfully, themselves. Fortunately for them, the political disaster that is the Bush administration is so overwhelming as to allow them to hide in its shadow. This won't last for long.

* Here I'm referring to those who view him in a messianic light

Let's see if I can do the math, here.

Despite, should an Obama victory occur, having a majority in both houses of Congress (and for those who can't count - 49 + 1 independent "socialist" who caucuses with the Democrats + Joe Lieberman + a Democratic VP = 51+1 in case of ties, implying a majority), this will not be enough for our trans-partisan hero. No, change "we all can believe in" can only occur after everyone who might utter the slightest word of dissent is totally and completely vanquished.

Hey, look at that - I can be "bipartisan" too when I only have to reach out to literally a handful of folks across the aisle.

And now, before the Obamanauts tear me to shreds for daring to speak impudently of their lord and master, allow me to cut to the meat of the criticism going on this thread - it is not that Obama is acting like every other partisan campaigner. It's that he does so while claiming the whole time to be above this kind of shit.

It's the same thing as his turning his back on public financing and you know it. Doing so was politically savvy and expedient at the mere cost of principle. Which, when it comes down to it, is what matters with Obama. Just like every other politician.

Am I the only one who thinks that people act like they're "shocked!" when a politician acts like a politician in order to avoid having to do anything about it, like holding them accountable?

Lets be honest, pretty much the whole lot of them is a bunch of weasels, but they're our weasels. I don't care how weasely they get, just so long as they fall in line with the wishes and desires of their constituents and simultaneously abide by the constitution. I realize the latter often comes in conflict with the former, and for people who feed off voter approval, the politically expedient route usually circumvents that troublesome document, but still . . .

Obama is actually correct on the first two statements, and the evidence against him is vague on the third. I disagree with him completely on the fourth.

It is a well done ad, but I wonder if it'll appear gimmicky and reduce McCain's credibility.

Ain't nothing wrong with C's in high school. I graduated HS with a 2.3 GPA. Wound up at Moo U and graduated with a 3.73 GPA (even completed the engineering calc series). Doesn't make me a genius, but then again, not making C's in high school doesn't make you one either.

^^ Obama is not really against nuclear, AFAIK. And he's not for corn ethanol, he wants to push Cellulosic ethanol, which if you're going to go ethanol, its the way to go. But, ethanol is merely a transitional product to a predominantly electric vehicle future.

Well, he's ambivalent on nuclear at best. He says it should be part of an energy plan but not the foundation of it, which I don't necessarily agree with since nuclear energy can at least support the baseline of America's energy use for longer than the other alternatives right now. His main concern seems to be that there's not a good place to store it since Yucca Mountain is on a fault line, but it seems like that could be remedied easily enough. I'd just like to hear him take a harder stance on it, I guess. But that's not to say that McCain's nuclear plan is really feasible because we have neither the steel or the $845 billion to build 40+ nuclear plants, especially if he plans on continuing the war and extending tax cuts. Ho hum.

I thought Obama was a big supporter of corn ethanol in the Senate, but I figured a lot of that is probably trying to represent his corn farming constituents in Illinois. But you're definitely right that biofuels of any kind are pretty much a stopgap at best.
