^^^cost as well as the overall lack of health care for many working citizens (which is obviously inextricably linked to cost, but is not necessarily the exact same problem)
what evidence is there that government has caused the problem?
it seems to me that in most countries that have far more government involvement, the costs are much lower.
note: i'm not saying that OUR government hasn't had a hand in some of these problems/costs, but what is the evidence that government inherently means higher costs?

Costs are lower? You fail to figure in the taxes to cover it as well.
Before we had govt and third party intervention. Doctors and hospitals had an objective to provide quality care and keep costs down. After all, you could choose where you went and were directly responsible for the costs of services.
With govt mandating HMOs people were given little choice in doctors, shielded from the direct costs, doctor reimbursements were cut so now the objective became for the doctors to bill as much as they could to offset the lost wages and additional costs of staff. Hence a rise in healthcare costs. Also, what happens to cost when a third party get involved sarijoul?
The answer to healthcare costs is competition and govt getting the hell out of healthcare. Allow people to purchase HSA or ins. with high deductibles and let the free market take over.
Look into the HMO Act. Let me know if you have more questions.6/25/2008 4:07:50 PM |

sarijoul, if we didnt have the govt stepping in.. they would be just like the people with bad credit that are still able to buy cars.
You and I are both too young to remember a time before ins. But some of the doctors I work with and my step dad arent. They can remember hospitals not charging for services and doctors doing the same. Now they simply cant afford to.
Sarijoul. We had a practice consultant come to the office to help us out. She estimated that we spend almost 80% of our man hours dealing with insurances for the office. Between questions about thier plans, filing, refilling, trouble shooting rejected claims, calling patients ahead to see what ins. they have to get a pre-auth to speed time up in the office... Its ridiculous my friend.
You asked me how the govt started this shit, I gave you the answer. taking more control of it simply isnt the answer... but people hear "free" and are all for it. 6/25/2008 4:16:35 PM |

i can't remember which country (germany maybe?), has a streamlined records system that is gov't mandated and has nearly eliminated the clerical costs of doing business in health care.
^sure (to your pre-ghost-edit question). unfortunately i only have significant (relative) influence on ~300 million of them

are you willing to pay 50% income taxes to ensure that everyone in this country will have access to low-quality healthcare? that of course assumes the government doctors havent already used up their yearly quotas for a particular operation that year since then that collarbone surgery might have to wait until next year] 6/25/2008 4:29:23 PM |

streamlined records is one thing.. Just like many other areas the govt forces these mandates with no incentive or money to help cover them. I forget the date sarijoul, but medicare/medicaid has already said that you have to have electronic medicial records by some year.. 2011? For reference my stepdad just did his office which costs about 50k just for the equipment.. his software is seperate and hasnt decided on a program yet.
They do this while telling us they have a plan to cut medicare reimbursements by 40% over 5 years.
So who is going to pay in your opinion?
Wonder why we are getting less and less doctors and importing more and more docs? 6/25/2008 4:29:27 PM |

Im not sure whats funnier. Your 4th grade insult or the fact you dont know the difference between an optician and an optometrist.
Either way, I dont craft lenses in an hour. An optician makes glasses.
Big joe, voting for Obama? Is it rich envy or just like your share of freebies? Or just want to be entertained by the SOTU address? Either way, I hope you are as wrong on your candidate as you are about what I do.

Just to be clear here, we already pay more than double per-capita than any other country with socialized medicine. So in reality, there would be a net drop in cost to the average american.
The 50% income taxes of European countries are much more because of other social welfare systems, and only a small portion goes to socialized medicine (I believe it's on the order of 5-7%, but don't quote me).
That said, I don't support socialized medicine by the federal goverment. I do support state run socialized medicine though, should they so choose. I'd still much rather see ALL government intervention into healthcare and hospitals removed.
And my vote will likely depend on who the VP's are.6/26/2008 12:25:54 AM |
