yep. make sure you do that now, then on monday run the installer (what you're downloading now) so you dont have to download anything huge when the servers are live.

I know many of you already read PA, and this came out yesterday, but I just saw it and thought it fitting for any who may have missed it:

i would, if i could. i've been looking at the skill layouts since i never got to try the beta. i've noticed that the skills have set positions, even the mouse buttons. is there no way for characters to do a basic melee attack?

they start in set positions; but you can change them if you turn on elective mode.

classes have a default attack, not sure they are all melee though.

in beta, you couldn't assign the basic melee attack to a skill slot. but, for example, if you assigned a skill into slot 1, and then assigned that same skill to slot 2, then slot 1 would default to the basic melee attack. its kinda silly, and i'd be surprised if they didn't have that fixed for release.

but honestly you really don't need a basic attack. your main attack will be a resource generating skill.

It's silly that you can't just go up and hit someone though... I understand it's not going to be a viable attack, but this is an rpg. I should be able to whack things with my fist if I want to

^I agree...it also seems weird that some classes will hold weapons strictly for modifiers on their spells rather than using them at. all.

^^ But it's the weapon damage on the wand that counts.. not a modifier stat like spell damage.

So if you have a sword with more weapon damage, yes, it is probably better at low levels.

At higher levels, things like int and +% weapon damage to wizard spells will have more of an effect

i don't know how i feel about this whole open customization business...on one hand, it's cool that you can adjust your skills any time you want. on the other hand, i'm not liking the fact that the only thing separating your toon from every other one of the same class is your gear.

i don't get why they didn't at least keep giving you 5 points to spend on your int, str, etc each level.

if blizz can afford to give this game away with a year sub to wow, then they had better have enough servers... they know how many preorders there are, they should be able to gauge how many will purchase IRL

I'm kinda pissed there aren't east and west servers, like every other blizzard game ever

This, that's always bothered me. I can see it hurting replay value. With D2 replay was driven by wanting to try all the various builds and also throwing in some non-viable but fun builds as well. You had to start the game from the beginning and play a while in order to do that. You had choices that actually mattered and replaying the game to see how different choices panned out was part of the fun.

Now it's just going to be try this skill for a few hours, try that skill for a few hours, see everything the character has to offer in just one act of one playthrough. You could start over but you'll have the same stats and skills as the first time, so why bother. That plus the ban on mods, even offline to bnet modding, and I don't think this one will have a fraction of the longevity D2 had. At least for me.

It's the exact opposite for me. I appreciate that I now don't have to reroll a character and level them up to a certain point just to try a niche skill deep into a skill tree to see if I like it, if it's useful, or if it will fit into my play-style.

I get that, I'm just saying that I think being able to try every skill in the game over the course of a few hours is going to hurt the replay value. I don't see near the incentive to start from level 1 and replay since a lvl 60 barb will be the exact same as a "new" lvl 60 barb in terms of skills available and stat point allocation.

That with the mod ban and I can see this getting stale quickly. Hope it doesn't take them another 12 years to get D4 out.

Edit: It just seems like they took one of the key elements out of the game. Decisions that stick. Part of the reason behind replaying an RPG is to make a different choice to see how it pans out. I guess Diablo is just an action game now?

see I think it's going to take longer than you think to get access to all the skills/runes, definitely not in the course of a few hours

you're earning acive/passive/rune skills all the way up to 60, so you basically don't get access to all of your skills until you can go into Inferno

that's going to take a while

and what he is saying ist hat some of us ARE hardcore gamers, but also would min-max in that case and probably not try all of the builds. I might play 2 necros, but I sure as shit wasn't going to play 4-5 to try out a few other builds.

the new styel gives me the option of leveling 5 characters and still getting to enjoy the experience of all those builds. the various rune and skill configurations will let you try out a lot of things.

if your fun is related to leveling up an awkward build, then yes I can see why you'd be upset (my buddy who played an all shout barb in d2 feels the same way), but if the difficulty levels are harder than hell in last game and/or you enjoy gear, then i think it'll still be a fun action-rpg, just with different incentives for playing long term.

i'm under the hopes that it'll take a bit of time to get 60, and even more time to conquer inferno.

i miss games that took a good amount of time investment and longevity to get to the level cap, instead of facerolling through it in a few days.
