Both guys on Sound Opinions created a new category for their new record: not even worth the energy to throw in the trash.

lol.

DeRogatis is very often a twat...he loves the Red Album.

Kot is pretty spot on most of the time.

Anyway, the two songs they played are some of the worst things I've ever heard.

DeRogatis is awful.

But that doesn't change the fact that My Morning Jacket has always noodled around too much.

I dont listen to this band a lot, I've wanted to get into them a little more. But all of the songs i've heard on Left of Center (Sirius) from the new album have been pretty damn good to me.

Some songs on the album are great. Others are in fact terrible. There's one called Highly Suspicious or something, it fucking sucks. The album does have a Widespread feel, I'll agree with that; and it sounds nothing like their previous albums...

Just because the vinylbandits and tschudis of the world spin records at a fucking hovel, they try to be oh, so pretench to everybody they can on the internets...

I don't believe VinylBandit gave his opinion on it, only the opinion of the guys at Sound Opinions.

Anyway, I don't understand the critical hate this record is receiving. I sort of expected it from Pitchfork, as they're normally trying too hard to be contrary, and quite frankly, they've never given My Morning Jacket a decent review. The fact that they gave Evil Urges a score that was the same as the new Weezer record (which is absolutely terrible) is just laughable.

I know several publications have given it generally favorable reviews, but I've never seen an album generate such polar opposite reviews/public reception. People are either loving or hating it, but I think it's probably their 3rd best record behind It Still Moves and At Dawn.

The new Weezer record is better than the new My Morning Jacket record.

And I hate 4/5ths of the new Weezer record.

Other than "Highly Suspicious", I enjoy every song on the My Morning Jacket record.

I like 2, maybe 3 songs on the new Weezer, and that's it. You obviously don't put much emphasis on lyrical content if you truly believe the Weezer record is better, lol. Christ.

That MMJ album is garbage. The mediocre songs aren't nearly good enough to make up for the god-awful songs.

i too dislike the new mmj album.

if however, you crave an mmj type sound that doesn't suck, you may be able to get your fill from the fleet foxes record. similar sound (to previous mmj), not sucky (see: new mmj).

Good album, great EP --I've been on the Fleet Foxes wagon for quite a while and will be at the show in July. In respect to FF, I would say their sound is as much Midlake as MMJ... if not more so toward the former.

For those that give a shit, the Sun Giant EP was recorded after the self-titled full album release (despite them being released in the opposite order). As someone who prefers the EP to the LP, I found this most encouraging.

^ that is true. or band of horses - esque. however i do not really care for midlake, either. which is strange. i mean i don't dislike them i just never really got into them. like they're just "meh" to me. and i really enjoy some fleet foxes so i don't really know what my deal is.

i am listening to MMJ right now (speak of the devil) but "Z" (wordless chorus). i'm at work and it is on my work mix since it is unoffensive and not obscure. the same cd coincidentally contains a fleet foxes song as well.

oh my job.

1. It Still Moves

2. At Dawn

3. The Tennessee Fire

4. Evil Urges

5. Z

(those bottom 3 flip flop a lot, but right now, that's how I'd rank 'em... sometimes Tennessee Fire is 3, sometimes it's 5, lol)

Personally, I like Evil Urges for all the soul influence, but I knew this record would be pretty divisive among its fans as soon as I heard it. I believe I said as much when it leaked in the music of 2008 thread.

first, it has gotten some pretty good reviews in addition to being panned by some people

http://www.metacritic.com/music/artists/mymorningjacket/evilurges?q=evil%20urges

second, the Sound Opinions guys can be wrong. in fact, I'd take Burn it/Buy it on the new weezer as an endorsement to take the opposite of what they say as truth. But, whatever

third, every Evil Urges song I saw the band play at Bonnaroo during their (already legendary) 4-hour late night set was outstanding. And IIRC, they played 11 of the 13 tracks. If, to me, the album was 8/10 or something along those lines, it is a 25/10 now. The songs play SO WELL in a live setting. That's what I'm gonna be doing with my New Year's Eve, that MSG show.

I seriously don't understand the hate. I can understand not digging Highly Suspicious, though seeing it performed (and not some crappy youtube digital camera video) could probably change anyone's mind, and I can even understand not digging the falsetto funk on the title track or open-endedness of Touch Me Pt. 2,

but I'm Amazed, Two Halves, Smokin From Shootin, Aluminum Park? These are just great songs.

^^ Although I have yet to see these songs performed live, I think that's very well said. Anyone who ranks the Weezer record over the new MMJ is out of their damn mind, imo.

I know music is subjective, and we're all going to have various opinions about a particular record, but I don't see how there can be any rational argument made for preferring that record over the new MMJ. It's absolutely horrible and the lyrics are the wost of Weezer's catalogue.

Hell, even after "heartsongs" cancels out "highly suspicious", Weezer's new album still has at least 6 more pure shit songs to go.

are you people really comparing modern weezer to MMJ?

seriously?

i mean, yeah?

jesus fucking christ.

to me, weezer is up (down) there with 3 Doors Down, Nickelback, etc.

they haven't been shit since the green album, and that showed glaring signs of oncoming poop.

After seeing them friday I must say I quite enjoyed Highly Suspicious live. I still can't really listen to it on the album though. It was just a fun song, they obviously weren't taking themselves seriously and it was working.

My favorite moment of the show was probably the solo in Lay Low.
