i heard bed bugs were common, but but but... how do you get them?

im washing my bedsheets right now, *long sigh of relief*

if i hadnt started washing them by now, i would definitely be starting them after reading this thread!

IIRC, the spread started in the U.S. a few years ago, starting in NYC. It was said that the bugs started to spread due to the large number of travelers and foreigners in NYC. They would pick up bed bugs in other countries, then when they came/came back to the US, the bugs started to spread, mainly in hotels. I'm sure other large cities had the same issue, but NYC was called out for having the worst problem with them

What a lease says doesn't mean a damn thing.

What matters is what the law says. Which is that landlords must maintain a fit and habitable residence.

If your lease does, in fact, address bedbugs as a common issue, that says to me that the bedbugs are a long-standing issue the complex is aware of, and refuses to deal with.

Bedbug FAQ

Ridding your apartment of bedbugs may or may not do any good, depending on whether or not they've spread to adjoining units. If they have, and the complex is being difficult, hit up student legal services and get their take on whether or not you'd be successful in convincing the landlord and/or the court that bedbugs make a residence unsafe. If the lease itself mentions bedbugs, bring that. If student legal services can't help you, contact WRALs 5 on your side. I think this is something they'd love to air.

It's not like bedbugs are like ants, which tend to leave you alone. These things actively seek your ass out, so you have something of a leg to stand on with this argument.

maybe student legal services can help you out with the lease vs. law thing and tell you what you can do

[Edited on June 29, 2008 at 5:27 PM. Reason : haha, i didn't read all of ambrosia's post...sorry]

I suspect that one call from student legal services will have the complex becoming cooperative very quickly.

Wickerman, you may also want to talk to your neighbors. If the bedbugs are in multiple units, treating just one unit won't help. If management is acting like this with you, they're probably telling others the same thing, and who knows if your neighbors will take the management's word at face value.
