Could a product contradict itself any more? So you pay more to have fewer chemicals and processes applied to the milk, oh except for that last process to make it into treated milky water.

And what's up with ultra-pasteurized? you're ruining it!

pasteurization and the removal of the fats does not add chemicals to the milk.

that whole raw milk myth is pure bullshit.

cases of listeria, salmonella, etc. have dropped dramatically since the introduction of pasteurization.

umm don't they just let the milk sit, letting the fats rise to the top

upon which time they are "skimmed" creating skim milk? I mean what's the big deal guy

You can still get all sorts of not homogenized and raw milk in many other countries, nay, most other countries. It goes bad fast, but daymn it's good.

i'm all about the organic milk because you can keep it in the fridge for a lot longer before it starts getting that days old milk odor.

I milked cows on a dairy farm for years and I always went home with a jug of raw milk. It is not for the weak. You definitely will not find that in a store today.

For what reason. The farmer allowed it. The fda does not operate in a very strict sense on individual dairy farms. There are no law enforcement officers in the rural-ass place where I grew up.

It is illegal to sell raw milk in North Carolina for human consumption. That said, jail time does not go along with it.

I heard the non homogenized milk is actually better for you then homogenized milk. Anyone know anything about this?

and organic egg>>>>processed eggs

^ What is 'processed egg' to you? Eggs in a little milk-like carton? ("egg product")

corn fed chickens vs grass fed (or something of that nature). The white egg part is actually yellow and it taste a lot better i suggest you try it.

You just threw me off by calling them processed. Eh, I trust eggs. But I would be willing to try them. Just don't try to pass off that "free range" b.s. on me!

Yesssssssssssssss. A good portion of the eggs sold where I live now would be considered true free range eggs and there's a huge taste difference. Unless I'm just using the eggs for baking I now always spring for the good stuff.

pasteurization is nothing more than heat, you idiot. no additional chemicals are added for pasteurization.

pasteurization= heating milk
skim/low fat milk = removing the fat from the milk, not "processing it like milky water"

I totally think raw milk should be cracked down with the fervor of the war on drugs.

I mean,

Quote :
"More than 300 people in the United States got sick from drinking raw milk or eating cheese made from raw milk in 2001, and nearly 200 became ill from these products in 2002, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "

http://www.fda.gov/fdac/features/2004/504_milk.html

I mean, the FDA (the people cracking down) says that it made 300 people SICK!

Just think of the horror! They got sick by doing something of their own choice. I'm sure they used the ambiguous term of sick because it's just that bad, and they didn't recover quickly, and their families are very sad.

I don't know that I would call these people stupid. I've never purchased "antibiotic free" chicken, but it isn't a stretch to me to think that some of them would be pumped full of the shit.

Furthermore, after doing a little googling, I've stumbled on this article

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/01/AR2008050103514.html

With this paragraph

Quote :
"Sanderson and Perdue initially based their legal challenge on Tyson's practice of feeding chickens ionophores, an antibiotic used only in animals raised for food. Sanderson and Perdue also use ionophores. "

I don't know shit about agriculture, so I'm pretty confused at this point. And now that I read the rest of the thread, it looks like lmnop is onto the same point I'm on.

So either you and bethaliegh have some 'splainin to do or you're going to get flamed for

from what i remember, all poultry/beef/pork could be given antibiotics at some point in its life. these, like any other medicine, only stay in your system for a certain amount of time. the containers these antibiotics and other medicines come in are clearly labeled that the animal cannot go to slaughter within 2 weeks, 4 weeks, whatever length of time. so, at the time of slaughter all animals for consumption are antibiotic free, unless somebody fucked up.

there is a difference in antibiotic free at time of slaughter vs. antibiotic free for its entire life, though.

i would rather eat a healthy animal that had some antibiotics at one point than an infected one that didn't (not that those who don't are automatically infected).

In my second post in this thread, I was referring to Tyson when I said: "Some products labeled as such really are not."

I was actually confused earlier. We talked about something similar in an ag marketing class, and I can't exactly remember but I think it was what I was thinking of.
