I actually like it for a casual place. I like the Aruba Red beer and the apps.. but I wouldn't go on a Fri/Sat evening... mid-week should be alright though.

^^Yeah, there are a ton of decent restaurants in Raleigh, don't take the girl to a place with some tool in a Hawaiian shirt serving your food.

go to Five Star....you will like it. much better than PF Changs IMO since Five Star isnt a chain. the atmosphere is freaking awesome.

i personally hate Bahama Breeze...i hate the food and i hate the atmosphere. esp. in the summer time. every thug in town loves Bahama Breeze...or used to. Since i hate that place and very very rarely visit the establishment i couldnt tell you if the clientele has changed or not

Take him to a steakhouse.

Any male with his balls still attached would rather have a real plate of food than some over priced chicken breast covered in some diced tomatoes and cilantro at Bahama Breeze.

The Rockford is great for something low key and casual- not expensive at all. It's pretty small though- and I've only been on a weeknight so I can't say much about the crowds. The service was great when I went (I had heard otherwise from some people before going, but our server was outstanding). And it's close to many bars and nightspots if you're interested in that sort of thing after dinner

I second the Rockford as well. On the weekends, once the dinner bell rings, it gets packed. But overall the food is creative and atmosphere is nice but a little small. ~$6-11 per entree.

Five Star

All very good choices - I would also add - Riviera, Cafe Luna, Sullivans, Cafe Tiramisu, and Pooles - my favorite, a bit pricey, but amazing mac and cheese...

Fuck the chain nonsense - do you really want to take you s/o to the mall for something special?

^^^^EXACTLY. I loathe chain restaurants.

I hate Bahama Breeze. It's so over-rated.

Rockford is good if you want to have a lot of alone time and you have a lot to talk about - the service is slow, but it's suppose to be like that.

Enoteca Vin is good, especially if you like wine. It can get pricey though.

Irregardless is always a great choice, as is Five Star.

yea it is baller, there are 5 different types of cheeses iirc. I was drinking up there one night chatting with my friends who bartend there and asked Ashley Kristenson (sp?) about the recipe.

Like everyone else said Bahama Breeze is ok, nothing great. But I would avoid the weekends as it gets a little dark in there.

i used to love going there

but then i stopped going about 2 years ago cause it felt like the place had started sliding into the dumper...mostly the food i had really wasn't as quality as it was the previous years

maybe it's gotten better again

the old owner stepped away for awhile and they kind of fell off

the new guy sucked it up

well the old one came back and got pissed with what was going on, apparently he didnt leave ANY type of way to tell them how to go on without him.

anyways, its back to being great now...just make sure you go soon enough there arent any parties going on.

and tip the bar staff well, especially Stevo my roomate, the buff white guy...tell em John sent you and they'll fix you right up.

its back to being baller

Bahama Breeze pissed me off when they jacked the prices on their menu and got rid of anything that was worthwhile on it.

Their drinks are good but only if you have a DD.

I haven't been to Five Star in FOREVER. I think the last time I went was for my 21st birthday back in June 2005. The staff was always super nice to me because at the time my brother was in business with the owner's son (Chris) at another bar in downtown Raleigh.

I have heard the food is getting better though. I heard that it sucked when the owner's son left to go start Savannah's in North Hills. I believe the owner did the cooking and that it was

I assume since Savannah's bit the fucking dirt the owner's son is back cooking at 5 Star, hence the better quality of food.

http://www.indyweek.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A257673

that is a short laundry list of everything that 5 Star's owner has had his hands in. Martin Street Music Hall is the club that my brother and Chris owned.

^ when chris would cook the food was awesome, and his dad didn't by 5 star until after the Savannah debacle. If Don was cooking ewwwww. Food at 5 star has really stepped up in the past year though.

I'll add Humble Pie and I have heard The Mint is good. Why in the world do people like Cafe Luna?

but probably pricier than it should be.
