So, I realized that it would be really nice and probably help with my power bill if i could have my desktop boot up in the morning before i get up, and then shutdown automatically once I am at work, and stay off till the next morning unless I turn it off in the evening to play games or whatever.

I'm sure somebody is going to tell me "i can do it myself" , and I can. But i'm normally in a hurry, and absentminded, and frankly it just sounds NEAT anyways.

So, how does one go about this? I built the PC so I can add hardware if need be but the only hardware i'm aware of that has features like this are the high end servers I play with at work that have integrated things in them for remote power management and remote telling it where CD images are so nobody phsyically has to be in the office to do things like reboot, shutdown, turn on, etc.

if you have a router you can get it to come online at a certain time with the old magic packet and just use task scheduler to run shutdown.exe

wake on lan + router schedule for turning it on, scheduled task + shutdown.exe to turn it off. hopefully your onboard/pci(e) nic supports WOL and your router supports this.

It takes a while to boot and normally in the mornings I'm in a rush. So it would be nice if it was up. and sometimes yes I forget to turn it OFF. Christ I thought that might be normal. (some people forget their keys, badge, the coffee pot, whatever)

You must be having a shit day because somehow I doubt that the person who
1. is in charge of all the bills for her household
2. is in charge of all the chores for her household
3. Has a masters and works like hell now in an engineering job
4. Somehow juggles that with all the OTHER things I do

Why do you need all this remote stuff when the freeware is available? Unless you're times of leaving and coming back home are always inconsistent, it would seem to be the easiest.

^ I don't need "remote" stuff. I was just commenting the only systems I knew of how to do it on were systems that HAD it. Those are at work.

For my home system I just need a "timed" up and down.

I use the noen push the button technique.

I do see the use for something like this though.

It would be easier for me to build a circuit external to the PC that pulls the pwr button low then to mess with routers and crap software.

its obviously not the time it takes to push the button that he's worried about. it's ass load of time that windows takes to load typically.. if you're in a rush in the morning it might be time you don't have

It takes what, a maximum of a MINUTE to turn on a computer? Unless you don't bathe yourself daily, I fail to see how this is even an argument. Push the button, go do something else, come back. I'm not making it out to be a bad idea, I just think it's a silly idea

If it came prepackaged in a new computer, I'd use the hell out of it , so in that respect it's probably a million dollar idea!

Seriously though we could run something off the 5V standby that will pull the power button low.

You will have to hard code it with the times.

I'll try it this week. I have a spare uC board.
