Yeah you're right. I'm just guessing based on the atmosphere as I remember it. They didn't put any specific emphasis on it, but that was definitely their favorite "talent pool".

I guess it's a lot different in the southeast. I-Cubed, my last company, and my current company are/were all having problems finding qualified candidates to fill their open positions. My last company, not so much any more because their VC went south. But I-Cubed is still desperate to hire good people as is my current company. There's plenty of candidates, just nobody that stands up to scrutiny I guess.

thats a problem here, too.

still the fact remains, "software engineering" is a nebulous concept and has no body to enforce standards or even present a set of agreed-upon qualifications.

any bloke off the street can call himself a software engineer. if he has the technical ability to program in the language being sought, and can talk the talk in an interview, he will get hired.

this is generally not the case for EE, CPE, ME, etc.

I've also said this before and you have yet to respond but... who the hell are you anyway? The only ernie i've ever heard of has a brother named Burt.

I make fun of your degree (?) and you make fun of my TWW username. Great volley.

If you're going to crack a Sesame Street joke, the least you could do would be to properly spell 'Bert'

Back to the thread, though

I'm on 'that side of the argument' partly because of a kid with a CSC degree from NC State that we interviewed a month or so ago. But i won't give out any details incase he's on TWW.

So why are you dodging the question? There's nothing shameful about not having a degree; plenty of people couldn't finish school for any number of legitimate reasons. You could at least man up and stop making yourself look even more foolish.

I'd be interested in hearing more about this. What constitutes "qualified" for your employer and how did applicants fail to meet that standard? Also, since this is a jobs thread and I need a job, are they still hiring?

also, if anybody else is interested in hiring a tww genius, let me know. earlier in the thread i said i was looking for Charlotte, but now I'm thinking I want to relocate. Raleigh preferably, but any reasonably metropolitan area is up for consideration

"CIOs were asked which technical skill sets are in the greatest demand in their IT departments. Their response? Administration, support, and management skills are golden. The top responses, according to Robert Half International:

1. Network administration (LAN, WAN)
2. Windows administration
3. Desktop support
4. Database management

What do all these skills have in common? They can each be learned in an associate's or bachelor's degree program online. Bachelor's degrees in computer science, information science, or management information systems (MIS) are generally considered ample training for administrators."
