Recruiting violations during David Thompson's recruitment, an illegal pick-up game or something silly like that.

More description:

David Thompson was on a visit to campus and while here he was visiting the gym and some of the players were having a pick-up game. David was apparently asked to jump in so he did. Now involved in this pick-up game were some of the guys on the State team and some UNC guys including a captain on their football team. Needless to say the guy ran home and told Dean Smith what he had seen and Smith got the NCAA on us.

Only UNC team I voted for was the '82 UNC team.

The '93 team is better than our '83 team...but I couldn't vote for that.

The 1973 and 1974 State teams went a combined 57-1 and undefeated in conference play two years in a row. No other ACC team has ever gone undefeated in back-to-back years. It can't possibly be any other team than those two teams, with the slight edge going to the 74 team for winning the National Championship. The 73 team was actually better due to senior leadership from the two co-captains guard Joe Cafferky and forward Rick Holdt, but obviously it's well known that they weren't allowed to compete in the NCAAs.

Do not vote for any UNC team, even if they were the better team. Once all the UNC teams get knocked out the UNC fans would most likely vote for the State teams over the Duke teams. I wish the 1974 UMD team was in the opposite bracket of the 1974 State team. We could have had a rematch of the 1974 ACC Tournament Final.

why is the 1974 Maryland team even in the bracket when they didn't even make the NCAA tournament, I know times were different then but come on, did they seriously run out of teams?

Maybe Virginia in 83?

And can you seriously keep voting over and over again?

^^if you don't know why that Maryland team is on there then you need to look it up

they were damn good that year and almost caused us not to even be able to play for that 1974 championship

that was when only conference champs were allowed to play in the tournament

a lot of people refer to that ACC championship game between us the greatest college game ever played

I've seen the ESPN classic special, it's all very nice, triple digits.. awesome

I just hate maryland and want to see a fifth school in there.

I would even say our 73 team is unnecessary had it not gone undefeated, it was probably better than the 74 team.

Top 4 teams (in no particular order):

2005 UNC (Felton, McCants, May, Marvin Williams)
1999 Duke (Shane Battier, "Jay" Williams, Dunleavy, Boozer)
1982 UNC (Jordan, Worthy, Perkins)
1974 State (Thompson, Burrelson, and Towe)

i'd definitely put the 91-92 duke teams ahead of any other duke teams

v yep Brand, Avery, Langdon, Maggette...all 4 of them were 1st round picks that following year, but i'd still take the laettner/hurley/hill teams

Ha...I meant 2001. I started to do the 1999 team, but then remembered they lost to UConn. So I put the '01 members with the '99 tag.

My bad.

We're still trying to catch up to all your Tennessee spam. It was so bad in the past, we just assume you're going to mention them at any given moment. I guess the time from which you have refrained from doing it hasn't gone long enough for us to expect otherwise.

^^For stating the truth??

That 2005 team was straight up nasty.

And Jordan, Worthy, and Perkins??

Jordan = Best basketball player ever (debatable, but at least 75% would agree)

Worthy: Named to the top 50 NBA team in 1996. #1 draft pick. 1st team All-American in College.

Perkins was a #4 draft pick.

The only debatable part about my list could be the 2001 Duke team. The 1999 team might have been better but the 2001 won a championship.

Either way, the 1974 team was better than all of them.

He was good in college, but he really didn't dominate in college as he did in the NBA. There are dozens of players who were far better as college players, which is the more salient point since this thread is about college teams.

except we're talking about best ACC teams, not all of Jordan's accomplishments in the NBA...75% of people would probably put DT, Maravich, or Wilt, etc ahead of Jordan as far as college ballers

and am I the only one that thinks the 91 and 92 Duke teams were better than the 01 team? as much as I despise Laettner, he led them to (iirc) 3 final fours and 2 national titles

We've got to get the 1983 team some more cushion room. They are almost even with 1993 UNC. That UNC team isn't very memorable really. The 1983 State team is very underrated. They were quite talented and were in the Top 25 to start the season and were ranked in the teens for a nice portion at the beginning. They romped out to a huge lead against UVA at home, but Derreck Whittenburg came down on a UVA players foot while shooting a jump shot from the corner and ended up breaking his foot. While Whit was sidelined State turned to freshman Ernie Meyers. As expected the team had to adjust and they lost a few games, but Meyers did an admirable job and really came alive as the season went on. Whit came back, we beat UNC at home (this game is known for the under the legs pass backwards by Sid). That team beat a number of teams ranked No. 1 at one point during the season (wasn't it like 8 wins?). If you talk about team and don't place talent as a factor, just the idea of a team, playing together, firing on all cylinders, playing hard, and valuing your teammates, then I don't see many teams in the history of college basketball coming close to them.

That team had some kind of divine intervention going on. During State's return trip to UVA, their students began chanting, "NIT, NIT...". Pretty ironic b/c we would go on to beat them in the ACC Championship game and then beat them again in the Elite Eight. As the team was headed to Atlanta to go to the ACC Tournament, Valvano and a few of the assistant coaches made a wrong turn and went to the wrong terminal in RDU. The plane that was at the gate that they came to ended up being one going to Albuquerque. The way the game ended was fairy tale like and introduced Valvano to the nation and showed off what a great motivator he was. The game epitomizes his motto of never giving up.

i'd take the '99 team over all 3 (91,92,01). that team dominated teams all year, went 19-0 against ACC teams, just fell short against a very good UCONN team that i believe was ranked #1 most of the year. Avery, Langdon, Battier, Carrawell, Brand is a pretty solid lineup.

2005 UNC was pretty damn good obviously, but they lost to Santa fucking Clara and almost got swept by a Duke team that was good but not great. The best ACC team ever does not lose to Santa Clara (even w/o a key player)

Laettner while at Duke went to 4 Final Fours and won back-to-back titles in 1991 and 1992. Only 4 other players (two of them being his teammates Greg Koubek and Brian Davis) to play in 4 Final Fours, and is the only one to start in 4 Final Fours.

1999 Duke team was very good, but their undefeated in-conference play while an impressive feat is not as impressive when you consider the ACC wasn't very good that year and only got 4 teams in the tournament iirc. 2001 Duke is nowhere near as good as the 1991 and 1992 teams. They were getting their shit rocked by Maryland in the 2001 semifinals until the refs came in to save the day by calling bullshit ticky tack fouls on Maryland.

There is no way anyone can convince me that the 1974 team was not the best ACC team ever. The fact that their only loss was to UCLA, the greatest dynasty of them all in college basketball, but then beat them in the semifinals makes this non-debateable.

It goes:
1. 1973 & 1974 State (tie b/c who knows if the 73 team would have won it all or not. it certainly seems so considering how badly they beat most of their ACC competition. I wish I had a time machine so that I could go back and fix it. )

and then everyone else is fighting for 2nd place.

Yeahyeahyeah....I know the whole Jordan NBA/College argument.

I'm starting to think that the argument is starting to make him an underrated college player. As a sophomore he was player of the year by at least one or two publications and unanimous as a junior. Yeah...he's not the best college basketball player ever...maybe not even top 10. But he was pretty damn good. And he was on a team with a #1 pick that year and a #4 pick (and he was a #3). It was a pretty badass team.
