^^well its worth it, and you'll take out all the engine and most of the parts so the final weight will still be significantly lower besides its gas free
also im hoping that there will be better batteries and that the EV trend will make them less expensive.

ha [no]
you are going to take out about 700-800 lbs to put in 1500 lbs or so not realizing that you are going to have to increase some components to handle that additional weight

well not if you're thinking just gas savings
if you're looking for a new used car and were planning on spending 5 - 10 K then why not just get a shell for a few hundred and spend 8K converting it, then you'll pay the difference in gas savings within a year or two and you're doing the right thing 7/8/2008 2:57:51 PM |

I get about 16mpg but I my job is only 2 miles from home Thank God this wasn't going on in the summer of '05 when I worked in RTP every day. Gas was a little over $2 a gallon back then. 7/8/2008 3:00:43 PM |

re: 1500 lbs
i know nothing about the amount of weight it would take or any of that shit, or how much weight the car would lose
but the factoid i heard was that each 100lbs of extra "trunk weight" accounted for 2mpg lost... so i dont know (what DO i know haha) if that means that it only takes away if its over designed weight
but if you take that literally, the extra 1500 lbs would take away 30mpg,,, what would the hybridness add? haha

a buddy of mine priced out building an electric s-10 that uses the tranny, and it would pay for itself inside of 2 years. 91 mph top speed, acceleration is ass, 70 mile range or so, and 8 hr recharge means no gas for the ride to work ever again...who gives a damn if you have to beef up the shocks for the battery weight, not buying gas is where it's at. 7/8/2008 3:04:52 PM |

^^^thats pretty good, also right now you gotta have more of a reason that just saving $$ to get it
luckily for me i'm looking for a new car since mine hit 200,000 so getting a shell and converting it is a good investment the only thing is i'll need to keep my current car for long trips. which is fine with me

from what I understand, the gas prices are going down mainly because the high gas prices have decreased foot traffic in the convenient stores attatched to pretty much all gas pumps. those owners are willing to take a hit at the pump in hopes of making up for it with increased foot traffic in the stores. 7/31/2008 3:54:07 PM |

i wish i were, i don't drive unless i have to. well, i could walk through the woods to the main road and catch the city bus, but no thanks. my commute is pretty long already without adding slow ass buses and stops and transfers and all that crap. i leave the house some mornings at 515-530 as it is.
but i do walk through the woods to go to the store and stuff like that.7/31/2008 3:58:32 PM |

I drive a 94 Civic coupe and my commute is about 6 minutes. Most of that 100$ is driving around for social things. Living in the middle of Charlotte helps too. I can get anywhere i want to go in like 10-15 minutes and rush hour usually doesn't effect me. 7/31/2008 4:01:09 PM |
