Original E-mail i received about 45 minutes ago, which appeared to be from our head of HR: (names and e-mail addresses obviously changed for privacy purposes)
And here is the e-mail I just received from our IT Desk:
Quote : | "IT Alert MyCompany Team,
The mandatory survey email that you just received was not an authorized MyCompany communication. Please DO NOT fill out any survey information requested. If you have any questions please contact the Service Desk." |
I didn't take the survey, but 3 people in my office did. The survey had 5 questions on it, including social security number. This should be interesting. Will fill you in as updates arrive.7/8/2008 3:16:32 PM |

if I go by the law of averages, 3 of the 6 people in my office did the survey.
there are about 680 employees that got the e-mail
so potentially, about 340 people are freaked the fuck out right now 7/8/2008 3:30:12 PM |

i really wouldnt be worried if i were them. having worked in a place where you had to leave your cell phone in the outer office because there was sensitive info past that point... like birth certificates, copies of ss cards, i-9s, basically all payroll info for entire county governments, etc. bigass companies like colombia flooring/mohawk unilin... all the way to alamance, durham county etc...
even shit like adoption records. passing though the hands of 20 people in a day. im SURE my info is on someones desk face up right now while they're out taking a smoke break
ps that company banned phones cause of cameras, but not thumb drives

i just dont think that people realize how many other people see their shit on a daily basis. i mean ive seen so many payroll forms, direct deposit forms, medical forms, insurance checks, etc etc etc and on and on, and i know that the 20 or so people working with me in the IT areas saw it all every day too. and thats just one little corner of greensboro.
i never read any of it too much, but i knew people who would read personal stuff and laugh about it... xerox death certificates of people who died of impacted colons, shit like that.... show it around the office, then throw it in the trash without shredding it
your number is all over the place, and since we played law of averages once... you know that just in my old office, out of the 20 people there, at least I had a criminal record. didnt do anything wrong. but they had me in charge of some shit i wouldnt want a criminal record guy in charge of
note: i have never broken any privacy policy that i signed at any old job 7/8/2008 3:43:39 PM |

hahah yeah no shit. they were like huge on this no cell phone thing, immediate termination, forfeiture of this and that on termination
so i went and asked the president/co-owner if i should sign my keys in with my phone.. cause of the drive on there
and she says "youre not gonna steal any data are you?" and i was like um no and she says "nah its fine, just your phone"
even if your phone was their phone and it was a regular motofola nextel generic thing with no camera.
stupid stupid stupid place, i should call those companies and tell them how bad XXXX was with their data 7/8/2008 3:50:14 PM |

aha im serious WillisBWhite
we would get life insurance stuff to process sometimes, and each check pack comes with a death certificate
or each medical check thing comes with a doctor thing to get approved. and there would be like pictures from colon scans of rectal cancer, all sorts of insane shit. i remember when the guy dropped a copy of a death certificate that said cause of death : "bowel obstruction" or something
like dying cause your asshole is plugged up. or something.
but yeah point is, youre dying, and people are xeroxing your medical records passing em aroudn the office laughing like hell
then just tossing them in the recycler or the trash

when i worked at Microsoft -- as a contractor -- i read all of your email.
and by "your", i mean every person who worked at a business that used MS Exchange Hosting Service. ... oh yeah, and Hotmail.
of course, i was only looking for spam and porn to write programs for the EHS filters
but still.
i saw way more stupid, personal shit than i ever cared to.7/8/2008 8:35:18 PM |

you would not believe the stupidity of people, with regards to the shit that they do on their company email.
one woman, a manager at a major corporation, was emailing details with her partner regarding a pornographic website they were setting up.
another guy at a major US/International corporation was receiving child porn from somewhere in europe. i actually ratted him out to the FBI.

I was with the Exchange Hosting Services (EHS) anti-malware team. EHS handles soemthing like 30 billion corporate emails per week.
I only analyzed two types of mail, in my job of writing anti-spam programs for EHS.
(1) email that was reported as spam by the customers, but missed by the filters (2) email that was reported as "not spam" by the customers, but trapped by the filters
it was the second group where all the good stuff was generally found.
and to be clear, i no longer work there.
